Frameless windows are subject to bending stress. The gas struts are critical on some models of rear windows, because pulling to close, normally on the right hand side, causes the glass to twist. Some fit a less powerful strut on the left to counteract this, but these tend to be changed for non-genuine matched pairs with time.
Also the struts exert a significant force on the glass when the window is closed. This is a local twisting action from the struts trying to expand.

Add in changes in temperature and you have the occasional big bang. This is very common.

How do people find the new style 1 piece glass doors like nh, jd are using in the 4 post cabs? Any costly breakages? They do seem strong but it's a big lump of frameless glass and you need to have a good swing it shut them! I think for the LHS door it is a better idea to have the MF, Claas, Fendt door and find them easier to close and less likely to be bashed about

the change to bonded windows wasnt the best of ideas there is zero give so changing temperatures is constantly stressing the window to the point it can be sat in shed and just shatter for no apparent reason.

The bigger the door, the bigger the bang and the bigger the bill. :(

Apart from the risk of physical damage, it comes down to design. If they design and assemble the glass so that there is as little stress as possible, which means having accurate shut lines with not pinch points or improperly shimmed hinges and latches that are lined up properly and soft rubber buffers, barring shutting them on a stone or something, they should last indefinitely.

Trouble is, there's a lot of 'if' involved. At least they don't rust.

My MF 4255 door went with a bit of bang. God bless the NFU - the bill was nearly £700!

Don't you pay nearly that much insurance premium on it every year? For the sake of argument, say that you've had it for 15 years and paid an average of £400/year, that's £6000 you've paid for your £700 without even considering the investment income they've made from it. God bless them indeed.

You just love an argument, don't you?! :D

I wouldn't have it if it wasn't a legal requirement. It is, though, so it's nice to get something back. Especially when dealing with our local office - they are very helpful.
