We’ve case 1394 it’s been fine running the last two days on a Tedder, last night it got shut off and wouldn’t start asif it was solid, let it cool down for 5 mins and it started again. I have recently changed the engine oil to a total lubricants 15-30 the tractor isn’t getting hot on the gauge? But the oil does seem very thin and the block fairly warm. Radiator feels hot too so I’d assume the stat is working.

Sounds like over heating, check the radiator and air filter aren't blocked ( gauges aren't always accurate)
Could also be the start of a bigger problem, possibly piston damage

15/30 quite thin for an old tractor, I'd have used 15/40 myself.

Get a gauge on it and check the oil pressure and a known good thermometer to hand to check water temps.

Maybe too late though if engine nipped up when hot.

What would you specifiy water temps as / block temperature I’ve got an infrared temp gauge I can use, hopefully its not terminal as it will start once cooled. Had enough engine drama lately to last me a lifetime.

most thermostats open around 82 deg c normal running will be around 90ish on average i expect, a pressure cap on the rad (depends on the pressure) will increase the boiling point just above 100 deg and then decent coolant will increase it slight more again but you dont want to be normal running that high.

Plan for the morning is drop the oil and see if anything bad appears, change filter and 15w40 in it, flush the radiator and block. And pray I’ve not toasted the engine as that would finish this year off.

if its only nipped up a bit due to excess heat or low oil pressure you wont see anything bad in the oil as it isn't that type of failure were bits break up and appear in the oil.

i have had starters cause this problem too but i'm assuming when you says its seized then its seized as in wont turn by hand either.

the fact its been replaced recently would make me even more suspicious of it unless it was a decent brand and not a piece of expensive scrap!
I’d assume it’s a cheaper one as I can’t see a name on it. Oil seemed very thin when it was hot and wouldn’t start. But if you leave it 5 mins it does start

Okay had a similar problem some time ago which was the starter getting too warm due to a leak in the exhaust. Might be worth checking as it should be a relatively easy fix.

Hoping so, we’ve had god knows how much money spent on tractors in the last 18 months to warrant parking the job up completely.

That seems premature to me. Check the oil level. Check the coolant level. If the levels are both OK, then chances are it was not a problem with overheating or low oil pressure.

When it would not start, did the starter make any noise? A click, a grrr, any smoke? Did you attempt to rotate the engine with the fan belt even? I would only drain the oil and coolant after you confirm the engine is locked up, or low oil pressure, or overheating, and even with overheating, wash the outside of the radiator first and see if it continues. Lots of electrical coils fail when hot, then work again when cooled off.
