Tractors...COST TO CHANGE!!!

I always think unless your running stuff that’s always in warranty and have a dealer that will jump the instant you pick up the phone to fix or lend you a tractor to keep you going, it’s wise to build a bit of spare capacity into the fleet.

We always run a close matching pair as main tractors, old one eventually goes and its replacement takes over the big jobs,

In an ideal world one main tractor would do all the hard work with a smaller one doing lighter jobs, however having the back up a close match in terms of size means if something goes wrong with the main one or we need a push to get something done we can get on.

I have known farmers who put a fair bit of business to their local dealer(s) and I bet if something broke they would get a machine in on loan or the machine fixed in a very short space of time.

Whether it's buying nitrogen or a tractor, the cost to the business is the input for that specific year. In the case of a tractor the input is the depreciation or appreciation plus repairs etc for that year in the accounts. Nothing to do with what cost of N or a tractor costs to change during subsequent years.

The cost to change figure is nonsensical.

Lets suppose Clive had to change from a 6R John Deere to a Challenger because the structure of his business changed- gained some land, lost an operator etc etc. Suddenly his second hand Deere, though it was looked after lovingly is worth a pittance compared to the yellow beast he now faces buying. Of course neither machine is comparable to the other, but then neither is a NH T6090 comparable to a T 7.210 or whatever the nearest horsepower machine is- they might look outwardly the same but they will differ in numerous details are are clearly not the same machine either. This being the case, the cost to change figure is make believe.
Think the point of the post is cost of changing like for like, the jump in cost to change is the main point, depreciation in business terms means little, your reference to the challenger/6r is like comparing apples and pears, if the tractor is on tick, lease, hire, cost to change probably means nothing, but if you pay it on the nail, it's the important one😉

Any man who goes from a Valtra to a Deutz can't possibly be taken seriously.
Two dealers in his area have had a brand taken off them and gone to deutz and neither has had much success (first got out of ag machinery altogether). You've always got to take things with a pinch of salt you can be very loyal and well looked after by a dealer and probably forgive a few issues if the service is good but it can't mask a product which isn't what you want. Likewise maybe can't get on with other dealers.

Yes it seemed like he wanted to stay loyal to the dealer. He didn't even mention the Deutz name in the video. Only so much a dealer can do though.
Interesting that he didn't stay Valtra, perhaps there's no one close?

New valtra dealer will be as near to him as his former valtra dealer was and closer than JD dealer i think 🤷‍♂️

Maybe its just a people deal with people thing. He did his best to give his old dealer the turn but the new product didnt suit. He obviously doesn't want to deal with whoever's got the valtra agency currently

I can,t believe changing to JD was cheaper than staying with Valtra, those jd,s seemed high spec to me.
