Yea I get that, but as a rule of thumb it must be a certain percentage. Not that I expect a manufacturer accountant to be on here to tell me!
Easy to find really. You can just look at John Deere’s annual report 2018 for example. It’s on the first 3 pages writ large...they’re obviously not hiding the fact.

They have lumped in capital acquisitions with R&D though - and last year or 2017 they bought Wirtgen the tarmac layers in their construction division for a healthy sum. So R&D and acquisitions runs to $2.6 billion over sales of $37.36 billion, so it’s around about 7% of sales.

I once drove a 8000 series while on a corse at jd, it had full independent suspension all round, the front suspension made it to production (ILS) but they axed the rear setup. Hell of smooth ride but I think the production cost made it unviable as an option due to all the massive moving parts. Wish I’d got some pics of it now (don’t think they where to keen on photos of there prototypes and it was pre sneaky smart phones:cautious:), it was a fantastic bit of engineering though,

I’d love to know what they did with it, it was a big lump to just chop up an stick in the scrap! Often wonder if they put standard axles on it and sold it as a used tractor maybe.
Probably hidden somewhere to be released at some point in the future.i can beleive Deere have not developed and released something like a fastrac

It comes down to market share and the same reasons they dropped the tele-handler, it won’t capture a big enough percentage of the global market. UK market is a pee in the ocean for them.

Viagra is a case in point. It was developed for people with circulation problems but found great utility in other areas. Now there is increased interest in it and the slower acting but more persistent Cialis in preventing heart disease. Research and development of the product and its use is still ongoing after all these years. Current independent research is trying to find whether it is the product that has the prevention benefit or the increased physical activity [horizontal jogging] that it facilitates that benefits. Possibly both? I'm all in favour of a prescription that seems to be win-win, as long as it doesn't create a tentpole type embarrassment all day long.
Avenge Wild Oat herbicide was another example of something that was developed for one reason, but turned out to have another, even more beneficial effect.
It was designed to be a Mildew fungicide, that as it happened was also found to control Wild Oats. That pushed its potential usage up and the price by 10 fold!

I remember the very same tractor working at Tillage at Darrington one year was an 8520 if my memory serves me right had a fair few moving parts so probably caused to much of a headache with maintenance especially with inner wheel weights etc.

The market for fast tractors is limited, many countries allow vehicles with full suspension and braking to do 50-60k, but they will require white diesel and a lorry style licence. The rules vary across the world but in most countries there is little advantage over using lorries
