A while ago our local steel fabricator told me he could only provide non CE structures if they were one offs.

Don't know if this is true.

All you have to do is change a portal frame shed design to be non standard?

Not true he just doesn’t want to get the designs for a one off checked for loading etc

I have seen sheds sold at sales before, very often they don't have roof sheets [not sure if these did] and they don't seem that cheap to me, I looked at a few and bought new not much difference in price and everything was included and done to my spec and if there was a problem there is someone to go to get it put right

shop around some shed builders want twice the money for the same size and spec shed
Ye for sure i agree!
This auction seemed interesting as it was on line only and would run over several days! They were only steel frame and purlings. But wouldofbeen interesting to see how things were!
Everything at sales seem to always sell for over the odds with people getting carried away!. Not sure this sale would of been the same! Thanks though

you would have to make sure you knew what you were buying and knew how much it would cost to buy the rest of the shed
I would want it a fare bit cheaper to take the risk of something being wrong

Stating the obvious but most things in life/ business are cheaper or more expensive for a good reason.
Ok off topic, sometimes one pays for brand name when owt between eem e.g.
Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda.

The welding engineer who's helping me with all this is of the opinion that EN1090 and CE marking of buildings, structural steel and building regulations generally will be more stringently enforced due to the Grenfell Tower fire and the fallout from it. Maybe this sale being cancelled is just the start of it?
Don't think so. Reported by a disgruntled customer who had a couple of orders cancelled as far as I'm aware.

Having seen the standard of some CE certified welders I'm not sure they are always worth the paper they are printed on.

Does this have anything to do with the sheds collapsing in the snow a few years back? Insurance companies played up?
The insurance companies paid up a few years ago because the sheds that came down were older buildings, probably built before the current standards came in. The ones I saw around here lacked a little bit of bracing standard on modern sheds (short bits of angle iron running at an angle from the beams to the purlins) so with increasing snow load the purlins eventually collapsed.
If you’ve paid your premium to insure your shed for the past 35 years and it collapses the insurer (or loss adjuster) could not expect it to be built to modern standards, but if you just built it last year the insurer would probably expect it to be built to the standards applicable at the time.
