UK government and major brands back bid to help consumers assess environmental impact of products

A new traffic light system on food and drinks packaging is being launched to allow consumers to make more environmentally friendly choices.

The scheme has been put together by Foundation Earth, a new non-profit organisation backed by the government, global food giant Nestlé and British brands including Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s, the Co-op and Costa Coffee.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading the Guardian than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. And unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can. So you can see why we need to ask for your help. The Guardian’s independent, investigative journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. Support the Guardian – it only takes a minute. Thank you.

What a waste of time that will be, developed by the food processing industry, I can not believe it! It is disgusting the way our food regulation system has be taken over by the food processing industry, and I think our politicians need to be held accountable for their dereliction of duty of care to the population.

We only have to look at the way the food industry heralded Ancel Keys and destroyed the career of John Yudkin, and the obesity/diabetes epidemic that has ensued.

Best let the fox guard the hen coop I recon!

Of course, allowing the food industry to help us choose food, will help climate change, by reducing the population numbers as premature deaths occur from preventable metabolic conditions!
