Ours came out of the Shed last weekend ready to be prepared, hoping to get it working in early June

There is something massively satisfying about lifting grass with a drag forager

Why the need to continually supply harvester with 1000 rpm spline, we all have 1000rpm with a 540 spline, saves the bitter every time of changing

I can think of 3 reasons,

1. some tractors (e.g. 3000/3600 series mf) require a change of shaft to change the speed, so can only provide 1000rpm on a 21 spline shaft
2. 21 spline has higher torque capacity, and this has to be one of the highest torque applications, although not generally high shock loads
3. it indicates the speed the equipment is supposed to run at

On a 540 spline the groove for the locating pin is further down the shaft than a 1000 speed shaft.
So the yolk is on further , fits better and far less wear & vibration on the shaft .
Lasts a lot long to.

We still run a mengele sh40 with a jd 6920 up front. The mengele must be 20yrs at least (2nd hand to us ten year ago) and the jd is now knocking on 15. The figures for a replacement tractor bandied about on another thread must be £75k + and a lely storm would have to be 25k at a guess. Add on a fleet to cart and stack the pit including labour and no wonder you don’t see too many about!

That's the secret, don't get greedy, just lift 10s and keep it moving,with an oldish harvester it's the hare and tortoise theory every time

Two tens work great,in first cut it’s plenty

We always lifted single rows going fast
Then one year the brother thought three into one would be better.
Nh 892 wouldnt look at it.
That was the end of me chopping silage

It was a sprayer at some point of bits life,couldn’t tell you what make,it’s been shot blasted and repainted

Love these pictures, reminds me of the good old days
As soon as I saw them I got a whiff of Add-F How many times did we try and lift a drum on the chopper to realise somebody had loosened the cap out the result was a shower in add-f and run like feck and jump in the canal dangerous times but happy days never the less .

I don’t miss Add-F one bit,who ever came up with the idea that bugs did the job and far better/safer needs a medal

Add F was the work of the devil. Awful working on choppers with Add F all over the feed rollers

Maybe heading for extinction but I wouldn't say its near extinction loads still being used or sitting in sheds waiting to be used.

There are new brands out with the UK and IRE that are still making them too.

Has anyone ever fitted a crop roller to a trailed forager? Any reason why it wouldn’t work?

Fitted a claas double roller to the front of a lely storm works a treat

A spare chopper is handy when you get down to our price bracket!
That's us got 3 reco sh40 now.
The one on the right was delivered this week, great condition for its age and it didn't cost a lot .
