Trailed machinery weight transfer

Trying to get my head around how trailed kit transfers weight from tractor or seed cart etc to trailed toolbars or machines ? ........( I have a bit of a project in mind !

it's all a bit confusing, does anyone have a nice simple way of explaining how this is done or a link to any useful online learning etc please ?

Simba discs had a big tread ran from the drawbar onto the main frame ,,if you extended it ,it increased the pressure through the drawbar down through the tractor ,thus increasing traction .
Its only a case of transfering the trailed weight down to the tractor drawbar

i cant get my head around it though - i keep thinking no matter how hard ram or thread pushes the drawbar down the swivel point of connection to the tractor allows the weight to come off unlike a solid 3 point linkage etc ?

Any machine thats trailed usually have hydraulic lift ,like hosch joker or a DD press ,,the longer the ram ,the more force it exerts down through the tractor wheels ,,shorten it and it acts like a jack and takes the force of the wheels

rather than using the machine to aid traction of the pulling unit how can you transfer the weight of the tractor to a trailed toolbar to help keep it in the ground if conditions are tough ?

If you have something that is pulling itself into the ground like a plough (!) then there is additional downforce above and beyond the weight.

Various manufacturers have made systems that transfer weight from the implement either by pulling on the top link or pushing. Extra weight must be added to the front linkage or back wheels to get the benefit.

You can't get owt for nowt so the downforce either comes from weight of machinery or from "suction".

If the front wheels are off the ground you got too much weight transfer! :)
Seriously though. Don’t some of these loadalls use weight transfer monitors on the back axle to measure weight transfer? Or a sensor to measure the ‘twist’ of the frame to do the same thing.

It doesn't matter if the weight transfer is through the lift arms or the drawbar ,,the dynamics of the downforce is the same ,,unless of course you have a 600hp quad or 9RX JD infront ,then it doesn't matter as they will just romp away with whatever is behind

i'm trying to get my head around this working the other way around though - ie. using tractor or a trailed hopper weight to keep coulters in the ground rather than simply being dependant on the frame weight

Massey’s pressure control was quite successful allowing smaller tractors to pull bigger loads.dont know why it was not further developed
Nick...
Looking at that video I wonder if it was the advent of 4wd being the reason that system was not developed further. I would like to bet most of the additional weight that comes into the rear axel comes from a lifting effect on the front axel and that may not be as desirable with a 4wd machine as those 2wd in the video.

You’d have to have two points of attachment to the tractor wouldn’t you to transfer any weight? Otherwise the drawbar pin or puh can only act as a pivot point?
