Trailed Vs mounted mower

I'll go against the grain here .

I had a string of trailed mowers and and went to a mounted and will never go back to a trailed.

Mine follows ground better you can adjust the pressure on the bed from the cab wherever your tractor goes the mower follows so none of the mower falling down the hill etc .

Corners are just different. But we do rake everything so have no issues with cutting square corners

My work rate is actually slightly higher with the mounted I'm sure it's down to having a smaller endrig due to less length so can get turned quicker and easier.
But maybe that's just me :scratchhead:

100% agree, in the last few years we’ve gone from a single Krone trailed...to a pottinger front with Krone trailed.... to now patching pottinger front and mounted rear.

I got the same acres cut in less time than last year. It takes a bit of getting used to not making too many steering movements in the rows and the trailed was slightly better in this regard as there was a delay before the mower would react. With mounted rear it’s instant and before you know you’ve missed a bit.

Corners are fine. Just get it with the front mower next time round.

As someone else said, biggest PITA is hooking it in and off. Even with the pottinger movable left hand headstock arm its a 2 man job.

KV Taarup 3m centre pull here, getting on a bit now but still cutting well. Our mower tractors have always been 100-110hp four pots so mounted conditioner doesn't work for us, think you really need weight and a 6T plus linkage capacity to be on top with 3m mounted with conditioner. Price of new stuff is scary now so it will stay for a while yet, probably only 5000 acres through it.

my issuer with a trailed is one the length of the outfit when a front mower is attached to the front, and two the fact non of our ground is flat so always on a slope of some description so one way you'll be pulling the spool to not miss a strip and then the other way the rear mower will only be using 7 ft of the bed because its crabbed across the tractor. Have wondered whether fitting small tractor style tyres would help it sit without it crabbing so much instead of the slick tyres its on now. rear is a JD1365.

The best type tyre for gettin it to sit on a slope is the 3 rib tyres used on tge front of 2 wheel drive tractors. Think there called a 10×16

I also want to know what the problem is because a big mounted Pottinger is on my shopping list.

My 2.8m Vicon is one of the easiest machines that I've got to get on and off.

Agreed our claas is every bit as easy as the previous trailed.

Mounted appears to be easier on the tractor when you turn right (the mower is on the inside) so probably suited to a tractor with GPS as we now make more breaks.

Don't think we will be rushing back to trailed unless we drop back to smaller tractors.

Yes, people should name difficult to attach mowers.
l work alone always and dont think it ever took me more than a minute to attach or remove my 3m mounted Claas disco moco.
Last year l bought a 3m mounted Samasz as a friend had started selling them. lt mows as well as the Claas but is just not quite as quick to remove.
Attaching is fine but removal is like a song, it can be over in 2 minutes or can go on for 5 or 6.

A bit like my sexual experiences....usually nearer 2 than 6 though .....

This exactly. Turn right instead of left and it's all fine All I do is screw the left arm 4 turns longer than the right 1 and the mower is on and away in minutes.

How many mounted mowers can be unhitched in the vertical position now?

We have a krone 3.2 mounted and its always unhitched in the vertical position now, so much easier as the arms have equal weight and takes up less space. . Pottinger before was a pig to unhitch as one arm was always higher than the other but I think that has changed with the newer ones.

The problem with the lely is the catch that locks it into work/transport/park, if you don’t get that right the headstock tips towards the mower, you either have the knack or not, the guy that used to mow didn’t have the knack I’m getting used to it now, also there is no way you can set it how the book says as it just doesn’t line up

Claas has a latch comes out so there's no pressure pulling the headstock towards the mower so it's sitting just ready to hook up

I'm sure I saw a claas advertised on here last year unhooked vertical. I'm not sure what's involved as I know I cant with mine but there's possibly an attachment available

You usually find if the mounted mower is set off right, it will hitch back up right.

In saying that the old drawbar model trailed was very handy.
