For road use do trailers over 750kg gross need brakes? When towed behind a tractor? Or is there a higher limit for unbraked trailers and if so what the max unbraked gross on the road?

“From 9 March 2015 an agricultural tractor towing an agricultural trailer will be able to travel at a higher combination weight limit of 31 tonnes (t), increasing from 24.39t. The existing trailer limit of 18.29t remains in place.”

but no mention of brakes?

They have always needed brakes, though most 3ton,ers you need reach out the back window to apply, I think 750 kg is still the max without brakes.

Best not to go into old artic conversions braking systems

That was my understanding the brakes might be a manual lever rather than overrun but they were still needed at least in theory although I guess most don’t operate particularly well…

Do trailed implements like balers, foragers etc need road brakes or not?
