After trying to search for a sutiable artic to cut down iv taught of the idea of starting from scratch all from new steel . Spring kit and new axels . Plan would be to have it on 445/45/19.5 wheels .
Plan is tandem axel 28ft
What would be best to make chassis from
Channel as the two side rails and back and front and box section as braceing inbetween the side rails aswell as channell as braceing . And then channell for cross crails and side chimes or would it be best use all box in the chassis ? And if so what sizes ?

Any info appriciated .

Price all the parts/ steel plus labour. Bet it’s not far off a new one from a well known manufacturer, which will be always worth good money.

Thats the plan iv axels wheels and spring kit all priced up next is the steel thats why looking on opinions on whats best to use most the trailer makers im nearly sure are usein channel on there chassies and have it plated along the length in a few places

biggest problen with trailers, either conversions or new build is controlling the twisting of the chassis.
twist is a good vthing with a dolly, but bad on a normal trailer
fixing the dre=awbar at a fairly steep angle can be a big help here

For squares or rounds?

Our 28fts are all 3 axles for big squares, so much more stable. I’d also go for 435/50 R19.5s, not much difference in size but easier to source tyres.

I’d go for box chassis, channel bearers and pressed C sections around the outside with plenty of notches cut for straps. Pressed is better than channel in my opinion as you won’t have the sharp shoulder rubbing on straps if you hook on underneath.
Box section main beams with plenty of crossmembers to stop the trailer twisting.

someone surely has a similar one locally, you can see what steel its fabricated from

other things to consider - what tools do you have access to, and are you good at fabrication work

how many hrs do you have available each week to work on it, and do you have the patience to stick at it when its going wrong

good few here have cut down artics etc, if you search you should be able to pull up threads

I would have thought buying a secondhand "donor" the best and most cost effective option.
There will be a lot of hidden work already done for you, but you know best.

Would you not "chance" buying it over the internet?
But, be careful if its an auction as the storage costs can soon mount up. Especially if the haulier lets you down. Most just want to swing in and collect at their convenience, but most yards now want 24 hour notice of collection, you cant win.
