Trailer electrics NH/Manitou

Good evening. A couple of months ago I reverted to student mode (as pointed out by a very well respected Agric). I manged to rip off the trailer light socket from an LM435A. It seemed I had only pulled the wires out (along with other components). The wires come from the main loom into the 7 pin socket (6 wires) that are paired with duplicate wires that go to the bonnet (the rear lights are mounted on the bonnet sides). If the paired wires are separated then nothing works. I have ID the wires and can make the rear lights work. The trailer socket is effectively used as a junction box pairing the wires from the main loom to the bonnet. Having sorted, or at least I thought I had. If I plug in a trailer, then it goes haywire. The side lights will operate and the right hand indicator. The left hand indicator selected and the rear machine light will not work and the trailer side light flash. What I assume is the earth/return has good continuity to the chassis. I am a bit stumped.
Thanks for any advice.

trailer socket loom plugs in to the main loom by the starter motor area and then loops back up to the bonnet.

Thanks Andrew, I have got that bit but I can't understand why it goes pear shaped when I plug in the trailer lights. The lights are fine on another vehicle.
