Trailer Insurance

I've having trouble insuring a livestock trailer and a general purpose trailer.

My broker won't answer the phone.

NFU will only insure trailers if the vehicle towing is insured with them. (3 x current premium)

All trailer insurers who answer their phone won't insure for business use

Can anyone recommend a company?

Thanks

Who is the towing vehicle insured with?
The cheapest option is usually to add the trailer on to that policy, whoever it may be with.

Stock trailers are insured under tractor policy, car and truck are completely seperate policy.

What happens if someone borrows your stock trailer, who's insurance is it covered by then?

There is a pub named after you in keighley.
I have car insurance which includes use of a trailer and separate trailer insurance as part of a general ‘farm’ insurance policy.

Our trailers are covered with the general farm stuff. Apart from the IW horse trailer (now sold👍) which was added on to the car policy, and continued on there even though the car we’ve had for the last 5 years doesn’t have a tow bar.

If your broker won’t answer the phone, how would you get on if you had to make a claim?
Perhaps there is a reason your motor policy is so cheap....

Same here I renewed our block insurance the beginning of July but still waiting to pay it , left several messages &. emails but can’t get any replies…..although the cover has been put in place nobody seems to want to take the payment……🤷‍♂️

Is be worried wether I was actually insured or not in the event of needing to make a claim or wether they’d honour a claim.
Also police take a dim view of driving without insurance and would almost certainly insist it was up to you to know for sure

Have taxed a couple of vehicles on the first of Aug. DVLA run a check with the MID & the vehicles are insured, apparently the broker pays the insurance company & I pay the broker, they are just laid back asking for the money, happened last year, I think it’s because everyone is working from home with no one minding the office🤷‍♂️

Be very wary about this - if the premium has not been taken there could be problems making a claim.
Would be a good idea to check on the Motor Insurance Database daily that your vehicle is still actually insured.

I’ve just run a check at the MID & the insurance is still in place…….I’ll keep checking regularly so will just wait until the broker contacts me I’ve given them enough time as from 3rd of July.

There have been instances where brokers have cancelled insurance with the insurance companies after a couple of months and getting a refund for themselves without telling the customer.
Completely different circumstances to yours though.

What risks are folk worried about enough to insure a trailer? I’ve never bothered but could do if needed. Is it against theft/ damage (which is a risk I’m happy to cover for myself) or something else I’m missing?

Same sort of thing happened last year but didn’t know until I found out the ins. Company cancelled the premium as being unpaid…….the broker blamed it onto the accounts dept. Again blamed it on to people working from home, people are making Clovid an excuse for a lot of things lately, funny thing though I was pulled over by the police in April they said the Land Rover I was driving flagged up as uninsured BACK IN SEPT LAST YEAR!!!!! which I knew it was insured they checked my licence (which I always carry these days) & said the vehicle may just of just been cloned but said it was probably a glitch on their system!!! funny how they left it all that time before saying anything.
Perhaps it’s because I’ve got a Lord title on my owners registration because soon as he checked the ownership he quickly apologised said I won’t here no more about it & sent me on my way😂

Theft of trailers is a very real issue in most areas.
Third party insurance when being used on the public highway is mandatory and not always automatically conferred from the towing vehicle.
