Trailered or self propelled sprayers

I still think a brand new shiny mounted 12 metre with some modern gadgets. Is less work over 20 years than anything second hand if you take into account time on maintance. Also less storage space needed & a cheaper quicker annual MOT.

Storage is quite a big deal, compact machine taking up little space might even consider heated store if work needs to be done very early or late in the season.

A 12m sprayer will take twice as long,
he has a full time job as a mechanic :banghead:

Nothing wrong with a mounted sprayer, new or second hand but 12metres? Why when a 24 will do the job so much quicker for not a lot more money and he has the tractors for it.

this would be my way of thinking too. i know you can get trailed sprayers the same width as SP, but i think its a bit like the BIG M argument, yes they are only the same width as a large set of triples, but the output isnt even close. bit of a bad example as SP sprayers are a lot cheaper than a big M, so easier to justify an SP sprayer with a bit of time pressure.
A Big M works when you need to drop a lot of acres and don't have a large tractor to run a set of triples and wouldn't have other work for it outside of mowing.
In many cases (and in the OP) the farm already has a tractor, so why not use it to drive a sprayer if its not doing anything else?
Its also one less engine and driveline to worry about.
The OP has 2 tractors, so if one breaks the sprayer can be attached to the other one.
It does seem farming is also a hobby for some folk too and they can make money off a few acres and have plenty of toys to tinker with and fill the day in. In that case a SP that needs lots of attention will be fine.

Exactly that is why he should not be in the position of looking at a broken down sprayer with a tank full of chemical.

New sprayer, 15k budget 12m mounted get some toys for it if he wants.

I work part time on my cereals, full time on the rest of the business 12m mounted is easy.

You’d have be on drugs to spend £15k on a brand new 12m sprayer that will depreciate like a stone when you could spend £10k on a decent secondhand 24m that’s already depreciated.
His smallest tractor is 115hp, it can handle 24m so why wouldn’t you?
Just making extra work and wheelings for yourself.

Started business over 30yrs ago with a demount sprayer on a Unimog and have continued up to present day. Next generation for a variety of reasons have decided to go down trailed sprayer route as they prefer operating in a tractor which we have. As a concession to me they are going to convert my demount sprayer to just a mounted tank on the Unimog and plumb it in to the trailed sprayer to allow me to continue spraying with my Unimog. Probably little to do with the Op but I thought I would tell all.

Typed this last night but forgot to post

Well just spend 2k then.

He has 150 acre a tiny job for a 12m.

But ok if the right one comes up nothing wrong with 24 metre, but its a more expensive way to do it.

It certainly will be (more expensive) buying second hand in 10 years time when another machine will be needed.

Sprayers often rot the Man who swaps every 10 years is not going to wash the sprayer evertime he uses it & re paint any slight rusty spots of blistering paint.

How do I manage with nothing bigger than 85 hp & 12 metre on 200 acre & growing some crops that need spraying every week.

You will say OP is part time but so am I.

Leaves a fair bit of budget for any maintenance.
I bet it would need some fair budget for repairs, went to see the Chafer, and the seller wouldn't allow any water to be put in it to check the pump and lines!! Something didn't seem right.

A new Unimog probably makes a bells and whistles SP sprayer look cheap before you have even put a sprayer on the back!
