Training/New skills

Good Afternoon

I am looking to extend my skillset as I find I am lacking in certain areas as we go into winter maintenance season. E.G welding, fabrication, general tips. I am looking to do this on weekends as I wont get the time off during the week. Is there anyone on here willing to pass down some things? Happy to pay towards it if you want. Or help you out. My current employer isn't very interested in teaching and prefers to do things himself.

Thanks in advance. Nothing ventured nothing gained...…

Cuts both ways, and I don’t like the broadbrush that’s bandied about on this subject

Our local machinery ring runs apprenticeships and pre-apprenticeships for school leavers, oversubscribed.

I’ve invested time and effort in training a young lad, change of domestic circumstances and he’s gone awol for 3 weeks now. Have a plan in place to hold position open for 4 months in the hope things settle down, and paying hourly rate to him to work through coursework and online learning when he can at home, been more than fair in my opinion. And t be honest, it’s fairly likely he’ll end up leaving.

The kick in the nuts is investing in folk and they then leave the position/industry. Oil industry hoovered up lots of the fitters, sparkies etc round here. Ag can’t compete with the wages on offer, albeit that industry hasn’t had its sorrows to seek of late.

Takes time, effort and patience to train new folk, and if there’s no commitment from the other side I can totally understand why some businesses don’t bother.

I appreciate the efforts that you are making to bring new people into your business, but it is still true that many industries just don't bother, especially, to their shame, the biggest companies who should be diverting some of their profits into ensuring the supply of new talent.

Over the last 6 years put 3 lads through various training such as lift truck, sprayer, slug pelleted and chainsaw only for them to be poached by others

That's the attitude the big transport businesses have had over the last few years-why should we train someone when they will go and work for someone else afterwards?

Well, the answer is to make sure the job they have is better than the one they would leave for. Not just about money either, being appreciated, having good working conditions etc all counts.

I can see that this might not always work for small businesses, but if everyone trains staff, then even if they move on, everyone benefits.

All employers should think about the 5 R's

Recruit
Retrain
Reward
Relationships
Retain

which is the managementspeak way of saying, when you take someone on, get them working the way you want, give them reasonable pay and conditions, treat them well and they'll stay.

But there is a cost to training, both financially and in time invested.

I find it really rewarding, seeing the spark of interest in someone’s eye, getting the considered questions and the first day when there’s no questions or phone calls, they’re just getting on.

It takes time tho, and you invest a bit of yourself in these people, they’re becoming part of the vision for the future, so when they clear off with their tickets somewhere else or just stop turning up, it’s hard not take it personally and become a little bit more pessimistic.

However, at the end of the day it’s better to train someone and have them leave than not bother and have them stay.

Remember visiting the claas combine factory and they basically had a school as part of factory to train new employees. Very impressive.
