Transport position for plough

Afternoon one and all,

I am trying to get back into my ploughing after a bit of a break and am wanting to make my life easier. I have a Land rover defender 130 and ifor williams 14ft trailer with a tef20 and ferguson plough.

Now to get the nose weight and balance right the tractor is blocked 14" from the trailer headboard which means the plough overhangs the back of the trailer, here in lies my problem I park the land rover and trailer in our back garden for security and the drive way is only 4 inches longer than the land rover and trailer coupled together that's between the shed wall and our gates so with the plough over hanging I can't get the whole lot behind the gates.

I have been thinking and the logical thing to me is to turn the plough through 90 degrees to sit across the width of the trailer , I don't like the idea of the plough being free standing other than straps for transport on the road or the task of man handling it through 90 degrees

What I am thinking is it would be nice to be able to hook the plough to the tractor at 90 degrees to normal lift it up and drive on and off the trailer and then when at matches un hitch and re attach plough in conventional position.

Has any one ever done similar or made something to attach a plough as I describe and be willing to share pictures?

Thanks

Matt

Best solution is to move the whole lot forward when parked up. The extra nose weight won`t hurt anything while you are static.

I've seen similar to what you describe but it only works if no land wheel on plough, fit a contraption on the side frame of the plough to take that has both implement pins for the lift arms to fit too and a headstock for the top link the whole thing doesn't have to be super strong as its only for transport purposes.

Not an option Bob, we live in a semi and the neighbours wouldn't appreciate me cracking everything up and buggering about with straps at daft o'clock on a Sunday am!

That's the sort of thing I was thinking about am sure I have seen pictures somewhere of one.

Well drive down the road with it like that, park up and upset somebody else. In all honesty forward weight is best. When you consider the rotational forces under heavy braking they exceed the recommended max nose weight by tonnes, not just a few kilos.

I hear what your saying but I don't want the hassle first thing in a morning. I am far more awake and tolerant by the time I get to where I am going. Have tried it with tractor and plough forward but it's horrible to tow not at all well balanced.

Last year I was reversing on and putting the plough on the headboard a good compromise but a pain in the arse when I get home as I have to turn the whole lot round to go in the shed as the plough fits under the bench up to the cross shaft, and in winter I am not allowed to turn around on the lawn!

Move house

No easy answer. Getting the thing positioned in the wrong place is a recipe for disaster; getting a snake on at 50+ mph is not a nice feeling! If you can’t get it right on a 14’ and you can’t go bigger you could try a 12’ and hang a bit over the back. Before I had my truck I used a 12’ and had the tractor about 6” off the headboard and half the plough off the back and it drove fine. It would drive me nuts having to bugger about dropping the plough off or moving things about after you’ve strapped it all up.

Give me a truck any day

I can get ot right on the 14 but it wont fit on the drive, i have no problem re hitching the plough in the field before the start of a match to turn it through 90 degrees at the end of most matches it can just go straight on with the overhang as it will come straight off into the shed its just tgis time of year when it stays loaded as out two or 3 days running.

I don't want to downsize trailer as we use it for other things not just ploughing as you say no easy answer, except 1 which may well be on the horizon in the future give up ploughing!

You have a problem! It has nothing to do with the plough, the tractor, the drive, the trailer or the house. How long have you been married?

4 years but its me that doesn't want to move house! Its me that isnt going to sell the long wheelbase rover! The boss would happily move to accomodate it all!

Dont ou bloody start! That's some one elses suggestion. I might move the shed wall eventually

Golf perhaps?

But then there is a third possiblity nobody has counted on. Two brothers hereabouts used to share a TE20 and plough. They both went together taking it in turns about. They used to take it on a short Leyland 3.5 tonne car transporter. They devised a means to upend the plough whist it was still fixed to the tractor. Dont ask me how they did it but they did it for years, driving about with the plough vertical.
