I don't suppose any of you know where there is a decent old lorry beaver tail or old cattle truck for sale at not too much money? That would be a good buy?

Finally got this Man 7.5 tonner...put tractor in back.......exactly 7.00 tons....so roller shuter door to come off and decide whether to shorten box a bit so not as much overhang and a bit less weight
Then reweigh to see how light to make tailboard .....maybe ally or part ally

Just an update on my man wagon....chopped 2 ' off the back to leave 19'6" long.....then 1' off the top to leave 6'6" headroom. ....lowered back door frame 1' and beaver tailed inside up to the spring hangers ,approx 3" long.....box section tailboard with ally chequer floor

Bin and weighed it today with tractor plough , half a tank of diesel and nobody in the cab and it came to 7060kg.....so nearly half a ton to put passengers ,cooker and bed in

So self propelled garage, transport and sleeping accommodation in one

Oh and it does 56mph up hill and down but most importantly it stops without any weaving or delay

Just bin sat wi’ a cup o’ tea wonderin’ to Misen if tha’s had thysenn a good nights sleep - safe in’t knowledge that tha waint be goin inter’t garden tractor class, avin ter fin a Shetland Tractor, nor avin’ ter join one o’ yon prohibitive diet clubs - you ‘avin a motor that’s legal n’all? :D:D:D
T’ony thing you need ter keep thi eye on now is 56mph (or not) on yon A roads - seein as how points make prizes and that’s wiyout bit abaht keepin it upright n’plumb wi all four wheels on full metalled carriageways - as opposed to lying sideroads on in’t dyke! :nailbiting::eek::D

If its old enough(like mine) the 56 limit and speed limiter doesnt apply, nor does the motorway lane restriction.

Went on a speed awareness course about three fortnights after Eddie Stobart trucked off to his last resting place. 80% of the candidates should have bin made to take a test again with at least 50% of them being banned for the foreseeable future seein as how they constituted a danger to both themselves and others by virtue of their lack of knowledge and understanding of the Highway Code. Out of 60 candidates in what was none other than enforcement agencies benefit day, there were only two of us who only got 2 things wrong. The greater part of them were down in the 20 or 30% region.
For my sins my two were, first a red circle with a plain white centre. Got the bit right about it being a prohibition sign but was wrong about it having to be qualified. It is of course (senior moments aside) ‘No Vehicles’ and secondly the speed limit for trucks on a motorway. Examiner picked most pointedly on me for this one - me avin’ a Class 1 (they asked at the beginning if any of us had HGV licences). Straight away I said 56 havin driven a million miles with a speed limiter (seems like it) stuck at 56 mph. and qualified it by saying ‘did you not hear about Eddie Stobart (died aged 56) RIP Eddie Stobart - Limited to 56! Said examiner (more’n like of questionable parentage) took great delight in telling me just exactly how wrong I was and that speed limits (at that time) for trucks all ended in 0 and were A roads 40, Dual Carriageways 50 and Motorways 60. Comments about limiters and age of vehicles fell on deaf ears.

In built up areas speed limits are as per signs for all vehicles- 20 30 or 40. If unsure as to 40 limits in built up areas then check side roads. Where 30 signs are at the junction of a side road it usually means the road you are currently on is at a higher limit.

For A roads cars and trailer combinations are still 50 but the limit has apparently been changed from 40 to 50 for trucks, much to the delight of millions of truckers who historically had run the gauntlet of either speed camera’s or mile long queues of enraged motorists.

Despite poor owd Ed bein limited to 56, the National speed limit for trucks on a motorway is aparrently 60 Although you would be well advised to check any conditions pre disposed by the age of your vehicle. Quote from Transportsfriend ‘Although lower speed limits will apply in built up areas and on many local roads, all regulated vehicles may be driven at up to 50 mph on single carriageways and up to 60 mph on dual carriageways. The speed limit for a 7.5 tonne vehicle on a motorway is 70 mph but are not allowed to use the third lane’

Just goes to show - even with the best and most adroit will in the world we can all be wrong sometimes (y):D Hope this helps and if nothing other, brings a little smile to your day!

We have something in common! I too had a "naughty boys" course last year! (36 in a 30), and the instructor privatly agreed that my old thing (the truck!) was exempt the limiter and lane restrictions, as I had read when they first came in but could I not bring it up as we would not get finished.
The 60 bit does explain why I am getting passed by all and sundry when I am trundling along at 50/ 55 ish, though not how, with limiters fitted !

Probably more in common than at first aparrent. My transgression was also 36 in a 30. Second camera 400 metres away from first at either end of parkland in a small town just near here......pass the first camera and it looks as though you are in the country ........ blinding flash just as you come back into the built up bit.....too late Ha Gotcha. £75. Or 3 points.
Two years ago a bin lorry in our cul - de - sac occasioned £300 of damage to the near side rear quarter of my car whilst it was parked outside my house. When I took issue Leeds City Council came back to me immediately with ‘all our vehicles are fitted with CCTV covering the entire vehicle. Unfortunately on the particular day in question the camera was not working. Unfortunately the onus is on you to prove that our vehicle did occasion damage to yours tather than on us to prove it did not. So. In the real world - pity it was a speed camera rather than a bin lorry as there is a good chance the camera would not have been working.

As in all things limits are there for a reason. My view though is that within that limit there is actually a speed that is safe and your vehicle runs economically and happily at. Good for your wallet and good for you - arriving not much after you would have done by rushing and with your head on right.

One of the banes of many a truck driver is the 7.5 tonners - especially 7.5 tonne horse boxes - all passing you at inordinate speeds, many of them driven by young and inexperienced drivers, 75% of them overweight and a lot of em in’t fast lane.

I know of one around here which is over weight before they put the horse in! Has 10 ton rear springs fitted to keep the headlights shining on the road! Just how it does not get picked up on test I dont know, as the vehicle is weighed as part of the brake test.

Think most of them would struggle to transport a Shetland Horse legally!

Agree...I understood you "big" vans ie the twin wheel 5(?) tonners can do 70 and go in the inside lane, but my understanding was your 7.5 tonner (ie light truck) was the same as the HGV's ? (which is now 60). Anything newer than 2001 has a speed limiter fitted doesn't it, so you're stuck at 56...

When I did my speed course the tutor could not answer my questions about 7.5 tonner privately owned not for hire or reward, he could tell me a definitive speed, and could only base it on what the big "vans" could do. He said he's ask a copper friend and email me, but he never did....
