We have a cow that had a sole ulcer that i trimmed and wooden blocked but the ulcer has become infected and now she is on antibiotics with a badly swollen foot
Have read a few posts on here about using salicylic acid to treat sole ulcers etc
I have never used it before so what do you do with it
Seem to remember @lazy farmer posting about using it

Hoofit from embryonics has salicylic acid, clay and other stuff in that might help it. She sounds like she needs pain killers as well like ketofen

Your correct. Acting on advice from here we are using it to try and help hoof development on a cow with a full length sand crack.so far so good.
No experience on sole ulcers I’m afraid.

What form does the salicylic acid come it (gel or a powder)
Do you apply it to the foot and bandage over it

Powder. Luckily she comes in at the beginning of the row every morning so it’s easy to wash off her foot and rub the powder in. The hole has shrunk from the size of a 10p down to 5p up at the top where the damage was worse and it’s supposed to keep bacteria at bay as well which is good with our DD issues
i think bandaging would depend on how clean she keeps her Feet. It’s easier for me treating the top of a foot

Totally agree with that though I do struggle despite my best efforts of avoiding every ulcer. Plus unfortunately once a cow gets an ulcer here it seems to become an endless cycle 🙁.
Recommendations on avoiding all ulcers welcomed.
We seem to get a lot less but we do a lot of preventative trimming Basically anything even slightly uneven is trimmmed heifers as they calve and everything at drying off. Plus breeding is also a big factor but takes along time.

This is the stuff you want. Contains iodine clay as well as salicylic acid. That prat the Hoof GP on youtube uses it. It does do a good job.
Been thinking about getting some to maybe cut down on tetracycline. Haven’t found it here yet.

Hoof gp videos were recommended to me and I recently watched a few. I like his videos and his style is very similar to mine. Why is he a prat?

Happy feet hoof care guy on YouTube is a butcher though. I’ve never seen such a rough pansy with feet. Hard to believe anyone hires him.
