Tree carving

We have on the farm a tree that used to be a bit of a landmark in our area , although it's a fair age and starting to thin out unfortunately a few weeks back a third of it came down which left it looking very pitiful then on Wed evening another third came down leaving a tree which is looking very sad and bedraggled
So this tree is positioned at a top of a hill with a footpath running along side it and a point where walkers stand to catch their breath

We thought it would be nice to try and leave something for folk to look at in the future and wondered about finding someone who might be able to carve something out of the trunk ,,,,,
So does anyone know of any artist , woodcarver , chainsaw operators ?????

I supply timber for a couple of talented carvers but you should be able to find someone on your doorstep. If it will wait while Sept you could go to the APF show at Ragley Hall and choose from the talent on display.

Only downside of doing this - knowing a local caravan site that had multiple sculptures done - is the carvings tend to have a limited lifespan. I would think you would need to treat it with preservative regularly and liberally or would soon start rotting away.

Chainsaw artist in question, whilst absurdly talented, like many in the same position had something of a chaotic lifestyle and now I believe lives on an island off the coast of Texas. So not much point recommending.

There was a cracking carving of a dragon's head on a fallen beech near Castell Coch. It looked like the neck of the beast was coming out of the side of the mountain, very effective.

Well thank you all for your replies but allas it's all in vane ,,,,, we went and had a closer inspection yesterday and it seems the trunk is rotten inside so probably not worth going much further down this route which is a shame as we would of loved something to remember this grand old oak with !!!!'

I would suggest going on the Arbtalk site and get the opinion of some of the experts on there. Many old oak trees can be saved even if they look rotten because that is how oak trees grow. All the really old oak trees have hollow centers some famously large enough for people to hide in.

Solution could be a pollard which could keep it going for another 200 years.
