Wales Tree Planting - the right trees in the right place

I'm concerned about the affects planting too many quick growing conifers will have on our valleys, waterways and soil. I understand we need more trees to help mitigate climate change but wouldn't tree planting be more popular if we understood the importance of planting the right tree species for the right terrain?

Thinking the same and will be researching native breeds for replanting a stretch currently covered with gorse in the next few years.

It's got nothing to do with the environment or climate change and everything to do with economics. They plant quick growing conifers to make money so until you can stop the over population using up natural resources to fulfil their lifestyles I wouldn't hold your breath.

We're on the case north of the border. Promoting the benefits of more mixed planting schemes. Likely to be a long haul but you've got to start somewhere.

The idiots at the Forestry Commission tried mixed broadleaf planting down the road from me and it was a complete disaster due to the high winds. Learning from that my scheme included fast growing conifers as perimeter shelter to allow the mixed broadleaf planting within to become established which has worked really well. The conifers were at my own expense and declared on the original contract as not being part of the scheme and not subject to payments yet now I am being penalised for having conifers in a broadleaf scheme. You really could not make this rubbish up.
