Tree shear for 7.5t digger - is it worth it?

Got a mile or so of reasonable Height hedge to coppice out and considering our options.

there are always other jobs where shears would come in handy, we have a 7.5t and 3.5 t machine and labour to run them over the winter.

we had a 13t in with shears recently who did a great job but cost a fair bit. But a 13t has more reach and greater cutting capacity.

is. 7.5t going to be too small for much tree work? What would a new one cost, are there many used ones about worth a look? What hydraulics are needed? I’ve only got one service pair so could only open / close, not pivot, would that matter?

As above great machine, have a tmk on a 7.5t here .hedge work I find it is better to cut off at hedge height,ie 4ft as opposed to coppicing especially if the hedge has been layed or coppiced before as it can be to clumply at ground level but brilliant at clearing brooksides (but not so good for boughing up at full stretch as I have 17 stitches in forehead as proof, operator error and I already had frown marks😄)

This is my hard life (bucket warehouse) one.

There are a lot out there. This for me was the best combination of price and cutting amount. I like the grab as I spend most of my time doing blackthorn and over grown hedges.

The power these have to pick up long branches etc always astounds me

You will get a smaller cut diameter with the claws as they close over each other vs the tmk or some of the others but I like the claw for grabbing big clumps of hedge or picking stuff out of ditches and it will still do the branch sizes I want

We looked at hiring one for a 5t machine. Cost was £500 a week inc del / collection which seemed quite a lot when you can buy one for under £3k

One double acting hammer circuit. Ours is only single acting so that ruled it out but we are hoping to change it over to double. We also learned that some makes have higher pressure hydraulics than other sand so are more suited. Our JCB runs at 200 bar but I believe some run at 250-300 bar which would be better

ours works a cone splitter, can get it to turn both ways, assume that’s double acting?

For a 5t and 8t machine i would go TMK, gives you the option of adding a collector down the line once you've saved what you would have paid in hiring one in.

We have an MDE 400 ourselves on a 13t and love it

i like the idea of being able to use it as a grab as well as shears.

does the reduction on snip quality actually affect regrow, other than the OCD in me seeing split bark and poorly cut edges!?

Not with ours and ours is the 060 model.

I managed to get mine with a 10 or 15% off promo so it was about £2600 3 yrs ago, not sure how that compares to the tmk or the mde ones

In my experience using a crab claw type shear grab to reduce hedges, you can hardly see where you've been working 6 months later in the year, the regrowth is so quick and strong. Far better than a heavy flailing which splits the stems and they have to regrow from far lower down.
