Tributes are being paid to well-known dairy farmer Derek Roan (71), who died in hospital following an incident on his family farm.

“It is with deepest sadness to announce the tragic death of Derek Roan at Barnbarroch Farm,” Roan’s Dairy said on Facebook.

“We are totally devastated and still in shock to what has happened and it will take some time for us to come to terms of not having him around.”

Derek is survived by his wife Kathleen; his children Stuart, Steven and Leeane; his children-in-law Aylett, Tracey and Tony; and his grandchildren Fergus, Fraser, Andrew, Lucy, Daisy and Skye.

“He will be sadly missed by all,” the post added.

Details of his death are publicly unknown, however it is not being treated as suspicious, according to the police.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “On Monday, June 20, 2022, we were made aware of the death of a 71-year-old man in Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

Well-known farmer

Derek was well-known within the farming community – as well as other circles.

Roan’s Dairy is a sixth-generation family farm milking pedigree Holstein cows in Dumfries and Galloway since 1891.

The family featured on BBC Two’s agricultural show That Farming Life, a docuseries following the struggles and triumphs of different farming families.

Among those giving condolences are Holstein Scotland South, South West Scotland Holstein Club and Holstein UK.

“Holstein UK are saddened to hear of the passing of Derek Roan, our condolences are with his family at this time.”

Hundreds more tributes have been paid to the farmer online.
