Trimble FM-1000 not working

We're looking at replacing a trimble FM-1000 screen which doesn't seem to be working properly. When we asked Trimble (or their agents) about this we've been quoted a small fortune for replacing the screen. I'm not delighted by that but it's a piece of machinery that we've become addicted to and we're going to have to replace it. The bit I'm disappointed by is that Trimble have said that we have to pay for the software updates that we've already paid for and can't move the software from the old screen to the new one.

So, does anyone have any helpful insights into the legality of this?
Are there any options that we should look at for steering, rate control and section control that will mean we're not stuck in this screwed up loop?

That’s fairly unhelpful attitude having to pay for things twice

That's what I thought. We have 2 different ways of looking at it: they look at it like a car and I look at it like a computer. If you spec an upgraded ECU for more HP in your car, you don't get to take it with you when the rest of the car stops working whereas if you buy a laptop, the version of gatekeeper that you have on your old one will be transferred over to the new one.
The fact that the basic screen is significantly more expensive than the best iPad you can buy is just a kick in the cojones really.
ONe day, we can just have a tablet in the tractor that has software on it that can be transferred at the end of the useful life of the tablet. And whether you buy a Fendt or a New Holland tractor, a Horsch or a Bateman sprayer and an Apple or a Samsung tablet is up to you because it all works.

What's the problem with the screen?

I had complete screen replaced on my fm750 for £350. Which I didn't grudge.

I wasnt aware any software was part of screen. Ours worked the same when it came back.
