Hi all, with the price of fertiliser been where it is and trying to use it more efficiently, is anyone using the handheld Trimble greenseeker to assess the health of a plant and determine how much nitrogen the crop needs? If so do you think it is a good tool, and saving you nitrogen?

It won’t save you N if it tells you the crop needs more! Also it tells you too late to make any difference to your N buying strategy.
I have no practical experience, but I’m sure it gives some interesting data.

What BOB said, these things are supposed to target nitrogen in the right place not actually cut back. It might slap on a load more and you run out of stock!

Hi Richard, do you have these in stock currently? I guess they are around £550?
For the first time I will be applying pig slurry to some of my arable crops and also have some layers muck available that I may topdress some fields also(not necessarily the same fields). Because all this is new to me I’d like something like the greenseeker to help me assess how much bagged nitrogen I will need to top up with.

I see the machine is calibrated to oklahoma, so USA data. What species and does that applyunder European conditions. What do UK research institutes say? Rothamsted or ADAS. Thank you.

Had one for about 10 yrs via Yara. Basically it just does what you’d do anyway I’ve found so we don’t use it any more really. For group 1 it agrees with standard farm practise of 225kg/ha and for feed 180kg/ha. Might give it another go this time but it’s like a lot of these add ons not really worth the cost of hassle of using it.

I’ve got a yara handheld one for last two years and to be honest it hasn’t been particularly useful. Might send it back. Gimmick?
