Triplets

Were giving it a go this year as too many triplets, decided it may be easier to supplement ewes than have lambs on the feeder and buy milk powder.

Neighbour (Valley floor) keeps them as outfits - Scotch Mule ewes.

But sit down before reading this.

They've lambed, now. The ewes are put on arable ground (class 3), wading in grass. He feeds the ewes twice a day until into May, and creep feeds the lambs!

They do well but there can't be any return on them???

Might be better than our way of lifting one onto a machine but we have 140 sets of triplets so have to do something?

He had scanned 80 or 90. Lifts 1 lamb off ewes he doesn't think will cope...

Obviously with the way things are I haven't seen him to see how his lambing has gone this year.

I've a mate I do days work for, he has 600 ewes, like me. 120 triplets!! Made me grateful for my 41

Outside flocks have them left on for a few days and then you’ve got an ideal strong lamb for adopting with.
ive had welsh brokers rear 3 no problem.

Last year with 20% of the flock scanned as triplets I left all of the 5/6 year olds outside to lamb and rear their own. They finished lambing on 32-91, they did them fantastically on grass only until Nemitourdirus took 7 lambs off. They got merged with a group of twins so lost track of them but at 8 weeks they looked like a normal group of twins and I’d be shocked if most weren’t finished by weaning.

On the subject of multiples- I had a ewe have quads this year, took 2 off and left her with twins, she’s noticeably lacked milk probably due to having twin lamb and not eating properly before she lambed. Thinking of culling her- right decision or would she milk better next year? She’s 5 year old this year.

I have left triplets on in the past and given 1 of the lambs some bottle. I have found that the ewe often only has a single the following year so I believe it's probably the best to take 1 off.

I cull any that lamb quads. At scanning the cull tags go in the same time the Number 4 is written on their back.
