Triticale - who is thinking of growing it?

Who is growing triticale this year? Or are you thinking of including it in your rotation for 2019?

A long term research project is being carried out by AHDB/ADAS into growing triticale, showing it can be sown later and harvested earlier and so can be useful in a rotation. Does this sort of research sway you or would you prefer to hear from actual farmers on their experiences?

I have attached a picture of Securo and KWS Fido from our untreated trials this year where it demonstrates how well triticale performs in terms of smothering.

We are looking to hear from and speak to farmers considering triticale. Please tag anyone you know who maybe considering it

Do you just want to speak to farmers considering growing triticale or do you want to talk to farmers who have grown it for years?

I am growing some more this year for wholecrop and 7 ha for grain. I am growing Agostino which is a shorter variety as I don,t want it to fall over.

Returned to growing it last year, fantastic crop. Perfectly suited to our land and situation, great yields of both straw and grain. Marketing the grain is always more difficult but there are people out there who buy it and know how good it is (y)

I've grown it for the last two years and my conclusion is that I can't see any reason to favour it over either a second wheat or winter barley.

Growing costs for me were similar to wb and where we've tried to push it, closer to wheat.

Yield in both years has been below what I'd expect from either of the above and with no advantages such as early harvest or milling premium to offset this.

It was grown under contract for a local poultry producer because they like the high lysine content of the grain. Year one price was between feed wheat and feed barley. Year two was the same as feed barley.

The marketing bumf on trit also suggests that vermin such deer and rabbits don't like it much, a claim I would dispute.

Promised much, delivered little.

What variety did you grow please?

Ouch, I guess our circumstances must be poles apart. Our land is marginal and due to maritime climate, wheat can't be grown. Trit has given us wheat yields with a growing cost similar to spring barley. Although we don't have too many rabbits, there are about 650 wild deer around here and deer damage was almost unnoticible, especially compared to barley, which at times can be stripped clean of grain over large areas.
If you have good land, triticale won't compete with wheat or barley, but on marginal land, it does what it was bred for.

I grew Fido and Agostino this last season.
Growing costs were similar to my winter barley. The Fido was 10 days ahead of the Agostino and about 9 inches taller.
The Agostino despite being an older variety yielded noticeably more and was significantly easier to combine.
The trouble now seems to be getting it shifted out of my shed.
Not growing it this year.
Going back to Milling wheat (Montana) and increasing Barley area.

Hi Simon, both. It is always worth hearing farmers stories and experiences and where Triticale has performed best or not as well as it maybe in some cases. We are also looking for seed crop growers for a number of triticale varieties and can offer competitive premiums. So if anyone was interested please message me.
