Triton direct seed drill

What horsepower are you pulling it with? And to what depth?
It varies. Today the closing tines are at 7 inches and I’ve got 230hp doing 2.7ha/hour, 1250rpm and fuel at 7.6l/ha but it’s light soil.
150hp is fine on light soils and the closing tines about 3 inches.

However I can murder 230hp on clay soil so I wouldn’t want any less here.

Look good. Do you find it any advantage to be able to put the tank on the front? Or is the back a lot more convenient. Thanks

It takes about 2 hours to swap front to back on your own but then it renders the tractor useless for anything else so it’s a last resort. But it’s an option that will allow drilling in very wet conditions that no other drills will do in my view.

End of October drilled into fairly trashy conditions.

Establishment looks good.

What sort of forward speed please? I presume 2.7ha/hr is spot rate and if so what would you be averaging over e.g. a 10 hour day? Thanks

Really depends on the situation at the time. That field was at 10km/hr and running back to the yard for seed and at a high seed rate of 250kg it averaged 2ha per hour.

However on precultivated soil after a fallow or roots on nice soils I’ve done 15km/hr.

If your going direct in November-February then up your hp otherwise you’ll come a cropper because you need forward speed for the closing blades to work properly. We are 230hp on a 3m which covers most scenarios unless it’s really wet when we loose traction rather than power. Ultimately a CAT 55, JD 8420T or a half track would be the best all round tractor because the Triton will drill in some terrible conditions but only if you’ve got traction.

Do you deliberately wait for serious rain before entering a Triton drilled field? Is it a statutory requirement when you buy one?

The drill gives you the ability to drill late for grass weed control which then makes all other operations late doesn’t it Einstein.

Sprayer and tractor probably pushing 20t loaded has travelled over the ground because it’s not massively disturbed like a min tilled field.

No need to be clever about it Lee.

When was that field drilled? Must still be kind / stony land to travel that well after all that rain

You were being clever first weren’t you with your rain comment ……….

End of Oct. It’s a clay loam. I’ll take a pic tomorrow of pure clay which has travelled equally as well so it’s not necessarily soil type it’s more to do with only disturbing where the seed is as the rest of the untouched ground then carries weight better.

What was it drilled with?

I think by its very nature the Triton moves the whole soil profile just a little bit either way which is why it takes so much pulling but as per the photo it doesn’t invert it. At least it’s something different rather than a reincarnation of something else. Not many novel ideas when it comes to soil engaging tools thesedays.
