Trooper replacement

We've currently got a 2000 3.0l Trooper that's possibly heading towards putting leg out of bed. It's mostly used for cattle trailer work, and as a bit of a run about for me. I'm after something around '05ish My question is this, is the Toyota Landcrusier the only jeep in town in terms of pulling power. Or are there any other options that you'd recommend that are good for trailer work. MPG is not really an issue as I don't clock up that many miles.

Cheers

Mitsubishi shogun 3.2 they got plenty low down grunt for pulling. Complete different machine from a Mitsubishi l200 of the same age they are only 2.5 and need lots of revs to pull. What age were the last troopers made?

Sadly there isn't a direct replacement for the trooper. Landcruiser on a par but pricey.
I followed my last trooper with a shogun and was pleased with it.
Nothing in the form of a pickup will come close.

It does seem with vehicles that the newer you get the less they perform

Get another trooper!

We have 2, we got one of them new in 2000, and its on 153k now

Bought a 2nd one with windows and all the toys last year, as a back up and it's also a great vehicle! It's an 02 plate with 90k on it.

I have a discovery 3, tows well and really comfortable but they can be a nightmare, mine currently has a suspension fault they have traced it to a broken wire, apparently the body has to be separated from chassis to access this!! Having said that when it is working it is a nice 4x4 and I would probably have another, if not land cruiser

Thanks for the replies lads.

sort the one you have, what is it actually doing

Starts and runs from cold no problem, but once it warms up there an intermittent chugging and loss of power, that clears if it happens when your driving, but if your sitting ticking over it stalls. Fuel and air filter changed and EGR valve cleaned with no success. This engine was recalled by Isuzu and had the injectors sorted shortly before we got her.

Any thoughts?

try recleaning EGR valve and replace but leave the pipe off , Oil pressure sensor that Dave W mentions as I understand if faulty they will not start, other than that a injector playing up. but doubt it will be putting a rod out with out some mechanical failure.
Does yours have the cold engine warm up switch did read that that could cause a problem when warm but do not know how

Air in fuel lines?Sounds a bit like its running for a while using fuel from the filters etc before a bubble of air is drawn up to the injector pump from fairly far down the fuel lines, like maybe the top of the fuel tank.Had to change the tank on mine for that reason, worth a look to see if diesel is leaking onto the top of the tank and possibly down the sides. However I'm probably way off track with that idea!
If none of the ideas on here work, then the Isuzu Trooper Owners Club forum http://www.itocuk.co.uk/ is a brilliant place for fault finding and help. Can't praise it enough.Got me out of several holes and saved a bucket load on garage fees and spare parts.

Thanks for all the suggestions lads

Oil rail pressure switch is another common fault. It's a diy job if you're half handy in a couple of hours. Switch is £75 from milners.
Rocker cover off and switch is screwed into the rail next to cam shaft

I had read somewhere about the pressure switch, could be worth checking.

Any smoke from the exhaust when its "chugging" ? If so, then have another look at those EGR valves...

Nothing excessive, a bit if she does it when ticking over but nothing noticeable if it happens when driving.

It has that switch but I very rarely use it. Strangely, this morning we had a couple of inches of snow, but she started with the first turn.

You're not that far off track with that, I've had the same problem a couple of years ago. But this time when driving and chugging stops, she drive 100%

When the oil rail switch was playing up on mine it gave symptoms of a misfire. In effect the engine was switching itself on/off 2 or 3 times a second until eventually it stopped and wouldn't restart. It was running violently bad rather than rough if that makes sense
