I saw a link to this video this morning. I strongly suspect it's a fake news conspiracy website but a web search was inconclusive. The US is just admit crazy enough at times for this to be real. Is it?

no one is there to pick them, as long as so many people sit at home waiting for Boris to pay them, things will not change, cut the dole money!

Back in the day, there was plenty of fruit and veg work available within commutable distance. Now, thanks to consolidation of production onto fewer units, there's relatively few people living within easy access of the work, meaning you'd have to go live on site and have your accommodation taken out of your wages as well as ruling out any chance of doing this work around family commitments, kids etc. It's a problem of our own making. Market share is the root of all evil.

I'd lay it all at the feet of Terry the tosser and his brethren. Each forcing evermore expansion of enterprises for efficiency and cutting out layers in the supply chain, in order to cut prices to grab market share.
The writing was on the wall for me when I saw their buyers in the docks, arguing over who was going to have which pallets of Canary fruit delivered to their warehouses and cutting out the wholesale market.
I'm afraid their pyrimids are all on the verge of coming tumbling down.

Speaking as a fruit and veg grower that is not true at all.
Yes people go and live on site but that is because they are from a different country with a different work ethic not because there is any lack of unemployment local to the farm. The locals are not unable to do the work they are unwilling, probably due to easier money from elsewhere be that other work or state handouts and unwilling to get their hands dirty quite literally.
There may well be other factors too but not for the reasons you claim.

I'm not saying for a second that the East Europeans don't have a better work ethic, that's indisputable. My point is, to take London as the biggest example, how much horticulture is within a daily commute, compared to any time in history up till 40 years ago ? No-one is telling me that out of a population of 8 million there aren't enough people with a work ethic to put their backs into fruit and veg.

Would love to share your enthusiasm. All the last 18 months has done is to show that whenever the cartel says "jump" our elected representatives reply "how high ?". Too big to fail. It will take a concerted effort by all interested parties - principally farmers and environmentalists - working together to bring them down.

People don't go to live in London so they can pick fruit and veg, they go there because there are easier jobs for easier money. I worked in Swanley 40 years ago and even then any extra workforce was made up with Asians out of Chatham rather than locals. Locals would include all the East End of London.
One of my ex employees lives in that part of the world, an amazingly intelligent lad that speaks 3 different languages and should be in a high paid middle management job. He packs sausages in a factory because it is dry, clean and pays enough for him and his family. It puzzles me because he is plenty good enough for much more.

When Heathrow is a market garden the workforce will be like the united colours of Benetton (y) .

A 14 year old is hardly a child. I bet there aren't many on here that grew up on family farms and got to their teens without being roped in at busy times!

Any work ethic in young people is being eroded by the government's insistence that children should remain in education/training until they are 18. Academia is not for everyone and those that chose to mix a job or apprenticeship with education are unable to save or afford financial independence further destroying their motivation.

I've seen so many young people who haven't got what it takes for good grades and qualifications, but have definitely got what they need to progress in the world of work - intuition, honesty, ambition, initiative. But they are held back and demoralised, forced to complete valueless (to them) college courses when they could be out forging ahead in a trade.
