Looks good but you have missed an opportunity

You cold have reduced the width of the frame at the front to give more lateral movement on the crosshaft

Take the bit of sticking out towards the wheel.

Thanks Dealer, I’ve seen this modification on most of the pro’s ploughs and understand it must be a rite of passage to get into the higher ranks! Again as a beginner, what is the benefit of the extra lateral movement on the cross shaft? Which part of the ploughing does it come into play?

Ideally if I can get away without it for now and keep the general appearance of the plough looking almost original to keep family happy I’d feel better at that, but If the ploughing bug really bites I won’t be afraid to modify further in the future if required!

The purists don`t cut the side piece off but fit a longer cross shaft. The rest of us luddites narrow the frame. You are doing a grand job and good luck.

Allows you to fit front leg on the outside of the frame to give narrower front furrow adjustment

When move your plough towards the left wheel when doing the second to last run
Keeps plough in line of tractor for more control

Its in affect turning a ts 59 into something close to a ts 86

Its also easier to move the crosshaft as the frame moves along the shaft and not the shaft along the frame

It won't make you or anyone a better ploughman but it will make all the adjustments easier and give you greater adjustment

Lengthening the crosshaft changes the geometry of the pull from the tractor

The arms should converge under the center pivot of the front axle to hive the ideal draft.

The mod as the picture keeps the crosshaft the same length also removes all the need for clamps on the shaft.

Are you confused? We are dealing with a TS54 Robin, not a TS59, or have I missed something ?

Here's the finished wheel, works great with a vast range of movement, so thanks to everybody's input. I'm pleased with the outcome however spot the component that required a fresh tin of paint as my original tin ran out towards the end...!

Different paint on the wheel? WTF. A really nice job and well done. Apart from YL boards your next jobs will be wrap around skimmer arms to get more forward placement and a longer cross shaft. To plough the single from the last two furrows the plough will have to move left by one furrow. Most of this you will have to achieve by moving on the cross shaft, the remainder( not ideal) by twisting the cross shaft to plough narrow . It is difficult to explain this but you will come to realise when you watch the experts. Good luck, you will make it. :D

One thing I would pick up on is the angle of the skimmers they need turned so they are less abrupt. The way they are set at the moment they will tend to bulldoze rather than skim. Those skim arms work fine for epics but you do need to get them further forward if you change to yl’s at some point. You have done a very nice job of the mods so far I hope you get many years of enjoyment using the plough.

The soil over skimmers should flow like soil over mouldboards if possible .

Only issue with epics is you struggle to get the openings and finishes cleaned out and looking as nice as yl ones.
for whatever reason, could never get the plough to pull straight. It always tried to drift towards the work, or creep wider. tbh though, a combination of overly worn shares and the tool on the seat didn't help

Thanks for all your kind words, most encouraging :D

I'm keen to keep on modifying and I think I've see what you mean by a wrap around skimmer arm but in different home built variations, if someone had a picture of the correct idea I'd be most grateful.

Also how much extra would I have to add to lengthen the cross shaft? I see I currently have about 3" of play either side, my reckoning to get an extra 10" furrow to the left I'd need to add at least 7", would that be correct?

Thank you, I'll see what I can do to alter the skimmers!
