A local bloke is wanting to hire my pure Charolais tup for his ewes, don’t have a clue what to charge what’s the going rate to hire a tup? He’s only a shearling n payed £800 for it at beginning of autum. Cheers

Its just not worth it tbh. Either do it for nothing because you are friends and accept it may die or worse bring back every nasty under the sun or don't do it. I've one lent to a mate as he helps me out with things now - its not coming home, not worth it.

I do it a bit for people I know, probably not a good idea but charge them £50 a cycle per tup

Charge the tup's value minus the expected cull price, and then cull him when they're finished with it so that it doesn't take any nasty diseases back with him.

That would be about £650-£700 in your case.

Not really that’s why I only hire them
to people I know, I know there flocks historys… i have plenty of problems anyways 1 more on the list won’t end the world

I hire tups out to a couple of small flocks that I shepherd, it saves the hassle of them having one or two all year, I charge the £200 each tup.

Usually spend £600/£800 in tups, I only use them on my own brokers to try them out and then hire them so not very profitable really but it keeps it simple not having 4 groups of tups in the summer.

Generally the types of people who are wanting to hire tups are the type of people who have 10 ewes that are about 10 year old and haven’t been off farm or within a 10 mile radius of another sheep in years and aren’t really a concern, they’re far more likely too catch something from me than I am likely too catch something off them…

Yeah I did a couple of years ago, but in the flock I hire tups to (I contract shepherd them).

I wouldn’t really call it a problem, I had 9 ewes abort with toxo out of 300.. not renting a tup out wouldn’t of changed that…

I've only got back into lambing ewes, 6 years now after a very long brake, and having been through an abortion explosion along time ago I wouldn't take any chances.

Tbh, I wouldn’t be too concerned about rams bringing abortion agents back with them.

Any of the myriad of other diseases & parasites they might bring back would be of far greater concern to me, any of which would cost far more than any reasonable ram hire charge would cover.
