It’ll do him more good than leaving him lame, and potentially with a temperature (that’s the bit that renders him infertile).

Thanks for that neilo that's what I was thinking, will get on the ball first thing in the morning, the bugger was expensive and is single siring the ewes he's running with so I don't want him out of action.

i can't get over the pictures of tups riding about in quad trailers:eek:.....mine would be out in an instant:scratchhead:

Once their in you can't stop moving, 3 BFL ram lambs this morning went 2.5mile in a 7x4 trailer ( we were moving handling systems at the same farm so needed that particular trailer) opening gates and keeping going around in a circle while the other person opens and shuts gates is key..
Keeping them very tight works too.

I've got a brand new 12ft box and I don't want it covered in raddle so that's why quad trailers are being used with us..

I’m due to change colours on the tups on Friday. I’m wondering whether it’s worth it though- I’ll need to get the whole flock in with the dog with all the resulting disturbance that causes.

Would it be better not to bother and just ask the scanner to mark any obviously late ones? I have 5 rams in with 240 ewes.

How do others do it? Does disturbing the flock over tupping affect the lambing percentage?

Ours come in a few times (walking a mile or 2 in and out again) while the Rams are in for raddling, marking of ewes, routine footbathing, moving fields etc.. never seem to effect our lambing percentage, our scanner will tell us if their in the second cycle (lates) which would only be a handful in 900 ewes.

Looking for a ram harness, local suppliers has the leather ones, any good ? Or should I keep looking, also the chalk, any particular brands to keep an eye out for ? Thanks

Started turning tups out with our main flock ewes and hoggs and should get the rest out tomorrow hopefully. We don't tend to bother rudding any tups as we would never get round to putting any fresh Rudd on at the right time, also there are a lot of tups. About 21 turned out today and another 30 tomorrow. These batches of sheep are only on 1 tup to 30 ewes but the tups have nearly all worked on previous weeks with other groups. One field will have 13 tups on by this time tomorrow!

I’ve used harnesses the last three years, having never raddled prior I’d say it’s fairly easy straight forward but just adds cost to tupping. Harness cost and blocks. This year each ram has a harness and a total of 3 blocks changed weekly with a different colour . I used this to identify estimated week of lambing which helps me at housing which I group according to number of lambs and week due (colour) this helped extremely well last year on feeding by not over feeding getting huge lambs on last week and freeing up group pens when lambing knowing certain pens would be empty by the end of that colour week.

Only ever had one break and broke on the plastic clip but still marked ewes, you have to make sure the blocks are correctly fitted or you my find the block on the floor and a completely ineffective raddling from that moment on this have not happend to me yet but know of people that it has. just click the block in ad slide it up and down to make sure it clipped in also worth the weekly change regardless of colour if they have been doing there job and coloured ewes blocks should be wearing thin that said

Don’t think I’d ever tup without a harness and block

Guessing there will be plenty of tups going out today for an April 1st lambing ?
Will be putting 65 rom/tex ewe lambs to a Romney, and 70 lleyn and chev/tex ewe lambs to a lleyn! All ewes already tupped for a mid March outdoor lambing ! :)

That was the plan, however my rams were getting impatient, the ewes were getting impatient and I wanted to go a sale today, so they got dropped out on Friday instead. All busy at it.(y)
