Tupping texel X mule ewe lambs.

What would happen if I put these to South Country cheviot tups? Presume the result would be reasonable lambs probably with a fair bit of go about them. With the Southie being a hill breed could I expect smaller born lambs that would be lambed fairly easily but with plenty of get up and go about them? Or is it a silly idea? Opinions please! This is my first post so go easy if any of you think it's a daft idea.

I can see what you are thinking but there are some much better choices out there from a fat lamb producing point of view.
Currently I use Beltex, in the past I've used Charolais. Both slip out nice small lambs that grow like weeds and are full off get up and go. The lambs will in turn be very salable too a wide range of outlets as they will fit the market spec relatively easily. Hope this helps

If you can get the right South Country Cheviot, they will produce exceptionally good lambs, both as fat lambs or as replacements.

Any tup other than Shetlands on ewe lambs can cause lambing difficulties, and I have no reason to suppose a South Country tup would be any worse than, say, a Beltex.

That just sent a shudder down my spine! The thought of a Shetland tup serving texel x ewe lambs on purpose!! 😳😳

A number of respected shepherds in the Scottish Borders have done just that, with surprisingly good results. The difficulty is finding a suitable Shetland tup among all the varieties that claim to be a Shetland.

No, not silly. There are plenty of hill breeds selling tups for next to f**k all that would do the get any old lamb out job.

I know two farms doing this with ewe lambs both mules and texel crosses. Your going to get a high survival rate and an easy lambing the alternatives may produce more expensive lambs per head but fewer of them... if your lambing indoor in a more intensive system I’d go more terminal personally but if outside lambing a southy is the better call [emoji108]
