Turbo woes

When changing the engine oil filter on our Cummin's equipped SP sprayer we remove the clean air intake tube from the air filter to the turbo for easier access. But the spindle, now exposed, that goes through the turbo could be moved up and down about 2mm's. It did spin freely. Not the sort of thing you would normally look at but now I know!

Should we exchange this asap or is this amount of movement OK? TIA

always been told up down movement is ok, its in out movement that shows bearing/spindle wear

there needs to be a certain amount of up/down, as the spindle sits on oil when its spinning at tens of thousands or rpms?
Also heard the same. Recon turbos are normally about £700 Mark, but better than it eating itself through your engine!

Cheers, not gonna worry about it. Must have a dozen turbo's about the place and not had a problem yet in my 35yrs(as he touches wood). Its just that this one was touchable!

sounds fine to me, theres always a big of movement up and down etc as the shaft floats on oil within the bushings when running. the only exception are race spec turbos with proper bearings which you will never come across in agri.

It sounds as the other guys said.. All good.

Ballbearing turbos have a little bit on end float. You know they are going to fail when you stop the engine.. They usually make very little noise when they are slowing down.. When they are failing... They growl.
