Twisted awns winter barley

What would cause twisted awns in winter barley. Had axial pro 2 weeks ago before awns appeared.....su to clean up some chickweed a couple of weeks before that. Could it be lack of boron?

I’ve got the same this year and it hasn’t had herbicide since early March. I’ve come to the conclusion it could’ve been late April frosts or a nutrient problem caused by the drought in April. The awns that were twisted appeared to be the first 5% that emerged which might point to them being earlier and coinciding with frost.

Several years ago I had some twisting and blind grain sites in barley. My then agronomist thought it was late frost but ever since then I've used copper and haven't seen it since, maybe it's just a coincidence but I think foliar copper has helped.

Sounds like even though you have some distortion on the awns, you are going to have a crop. Spare a thought for the chaps that grew Torrent winter barley, (I think it was late eighties or early nineties). It was a very early variety, probably two weeks earlier than most, popular as an entry for rape and also with livestock guys because of high straw yields. We had some severe late frosts, that coincided with the ear moving up the sheath and most crops had blind ears and were cut for silage in the end.

Early 90s. The variety that brought baymv resistance.

All of my Amistar winter barely was effectively wiped out by frost at flowering last year. Never seen it before, don’t want to again.

1990. Apollo winter wheat was also badly hit but like Torrent it was the timing of the frost on an early developing variety. Ears were well up the stem and on their way out when a minus 7-8 hit.
