I've had an email back from oatly and the sources they quote have done exactly as described in the link above (comparing whole lifecycle livestock emissions - 'with only direct transport emissions).
This means packaging, refrigeration and transport of animal products to retailer is included in the livestock figs. But making cars/planes/ships and extracting fuel to power them and cost to scrap them isn't included in the transport figures. Not very fair or like for like. So I'll be sharing this link with them and ask for a response.

From their responses you can see on twatter the pr dept is pretty vacuous.

I have had the same, but no contact from Oatly. It looks like we will be getting our Oat milk via our Milkman from now on. Not sure where it comes from but they use British Oats, which has to be a good thing. This is the info about it. Started in the North West apparently.

"The freshest oat drink imaginable, crafted for micro-foam and coffee stability, made using UK ingredients and delivered to your doorstep in a fully reusable glass bottle that supports British business. Sounds like a dream, right? Well, with Oato, it’s a reality.

Oato was founded on the belief there must be a better option of dairy alternative than imported UHT varieties packaged in non-resusable Tetrapaks. With founder Carl Hopwood’s background in Chemistry, Oato set out to craft the finest & freshest oat drink you’ll ever taste, and bottled it in reusable glass.

Keen to support British business, they used British oats, water, rapeseed oil and salt to create the freshest, creamiest oat m*lk around - one can be used just the same as dairy milk, even in hot drinks!

Luckily for us, Oato saw the iconic British milkman as the perfect partner to make their vision a reality. With their brilliant British innovation bottled in reusable glass, it’s the perfect addition to our zero-waste range that makes its way to your doorsteps in our electric floats.

Once you’re finished, the glass bottles will be collected by your milkman to be reused as many times as possible. Oato is the latest welcome addition to our ‘Reuse, Reduce, Repeat’ cycle. "

Interesting. The author certainly goes after Oatly in a big way and I don't have a problem with that as such. The product itself isn't inherently unhealthy, whether the glucose is originally starch, maltose, lactose or whatever, it's still going to have the same insulin resistance effect ultimately. Indeed the quantities involved are tiny in a human's daily diet and so not as big a deal as the author makes out. It's a relief to see they're using pressed rapeseed oil in fact, rather than any of the other industrial oils which are far worse. Some people can't drink milk, I have no problem with that.

The problem is the outrageous lying about climate change. Shame the author didn't go after them on that, but then the article was written before the current marketing campaign.

Good find @Sid - worthy of a thread in its self and shows how so much advertising works from the half truths. Especially when products are presented as lifestyle.

This part made me laugh when talking about being made for humans (cow milk being made for cows, goat milk for goats, etc).

If it just meant “designed for human consumption” then it would include cigarettes, alcohol, and heroin, which isn’t what I think Oatly is going for. There has to be an implied health element to it. There are a number of ways we could define “healthy,” but the most generous is to consider something healthy if it’s not demonstrably harmful to your health from normal consumption. A Greek salad with olive oil is healthy. Coca-cola is not.

So is Oatly designed for human consumption? Definitely. Is it healthy? Definitely not.

This advert was seen on Twitter this evening. Completely wrong, totally misleading. One of 2 adverts I saw for Oatly on twitter this evening.
How are companies able to put this stuff out with such wrong information on. I appreciate I gave put a screenshot up, and most of the content is in a video, but the text gives the gist of it.
Surely they need to work with farmers to get their oats. They would be better off to say all their oats come from Red Tractor assured farms,(tongue in cheek), rather than slag of the competition!

Report it to both Twitter (who have a fact check team) and the ASA

this stuff exists only because people don't act

The NFU (if they were any bloody use) should use their legal team in such cases to pursue damages to be distributed to farmers ............ Member ? maybe write to them and ask why not ......... or resign

Came from a NFU member in Cornwall.

I see @Clive has borrowed it for twitter as well.

I did complain to the ASA, and it is going through their process, which is far too long winded as the moment has passed a bit.
Tried to speak to the NFU and RT, did not get very far with either. I am more annoyed with RT than the NFU, I am not a member so can not moan too much about them. I thought this would be prime RT territory to try and get a premium market for British grown Oats, but obviously it was too much effort. I do not understand what they are there for if this is not their department.
Had a chat with someone at AHDB but that is as far as they seem to have gone as well.
I have just had a reply from Oatly, here it is. It does not really say a lot, I will do a reply to it later this evening.

Hi Frank,

Thank you so much for taking the time to get in touch sharing your thoughts. I'm so sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

Our campaign is not at all about alienating farmers. On the contrary, we believe farmers are essential to all of us and are key to a sustainable food future.

Our aim with this campaign is to create a conversation to help raise awareness about the environmental impact of our daily choices of foods. It's about us all having to increase our plant-based consumption and production and decrease our intake of meat and dairy for the sake of the planet.

We’ve done a whole load of research for this campaign and you can find all the sources here on our website. Our references are supported by reputable sources, drawn from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and The Food and Agriculture Organisation.

I'd also like to tell you about a project we run with Swedish farmers where we identify and follow the environmental impact of 10 farms over a three-year period. These farms will increase their share of crops for human consumption during the project, and to thereby reduce their climate impact. This project is also part of a larger European research project, UNISECO. The results will be used to establish a more sustainable farming sector throughout Europe.

Thanks again for getting in touch. I hope this has helped clarify where we are coming from here, if you have any other questions, please let us know.

You could start by reminding them the IPCC has been pretty much pulled apart.

Its all marketing.

These thin spectacle wearing weirdos will be the ruination of society with their lies and slick campaigns designed to pull on the conscience to make folk buy into the latest snake oil product or “lifestyle”.

I did a module on marketing for an msc, the books may as well of been written in hieroglyphs, utter shite, couldn’t understand a word of it. It got to the stage where it was impossible to concentrate on the module for a little voice in my head repeatedly saying “this is shite, this is shite”.

They’ve a lot to answer for too:

“this product kills 99.9% of all known bacteria”

Is that a good thing or is that why everyone is now allergic to everything?
