Tyre size for ford 6410

I have a ford 6410 4wd with 13.6x38 tyres on back with 12.4x24 on front, tractor came off a vegetable farm hence the narrow tyres. So I bought a set of 16.9x34 rims and tyres but what tyres do I need on front? I though 13.6x24 but just after speaking to tyre supplier and he says they should stay 12.4x24 as 13.6x38 are the same diamater as 16.9x34. Looked up tractor data.com and it says 16.9x34 with 13.6x24.
Any help appreciated

Hmmmm

Wheels,

Tyres,

Old Ford's...

I reckon I know the man for the job!

@Nearly :)

13.6 38 are same rolling radius as 16.9 34 so you can leave front unchanged.
There's supposed to be 2 different ratio cogs which can be fitted in the 4wd drop box which might explain the difference on tractordata. Stick with what your tractor tells you.

I too thought 13.6 38 and 16.9 34 were same rolling radius, but @Thomas5060 didn't think so ?:

Hmmm, just wondering now did the previous owner put as much thought into the tyres, back rims are new holland rims so they've been put on at a time, 4 good years all round so I'd say they where all put on together, if the front 12.4x24s where incompatible with whatever cog is is the drop box would it be very noticeable when driving the tractor? Seems to drive smoothly in 4wd etc as it is at the minute

If it goes in and out of 4 WD I'd say it's all fine

Has anyone got the interaxle ratio for a 6410 and I'll work it out. 16.9x34 is slightly bigger than 13.6x38 but I don't think it's enough to do any harm with 12.4x24 fronts unless you had new back tyres and slick fronts.

The back wheels which I've got has about 50/60% thread, fronts have about 10-15%, I was going to put on new fronts, klebers probably, something wider than 12.4s that's on atm. The tractor seems to drive fine in and when 4wd is engaged, I'd have thought if the existing fronts is the wrong size surely it would be noticeable in that the front wheels would be working against the back wheels.

Have you put the 16.9s on yet? Any wind up is most noticeable when disengaging 4wd on full lock, if it doesn't bang or jump it'll likely be fine.

No, havnt put them on yet but if the 13.6x38s are much the same as the 34s then she'd be wrongly geared now but seems to be ok, I'll have to try the tractor in and out of 4wd on the concrete tomorrow and see what she's like, I've only been in 4wd in the field so Id imagine it would be less noticeable

6410 had matched 16.9 x34 and 13.6x24 when supplied new
This is a couple of extracts from a Ford service bulletin, unfortunately I can't find the page with tyre sizes :banghead: but note that there are 3 different transfer box ratios for the 6610 which would be the same with the 6410

Had a 6710 here on 16.9 x 38 and 13.6 x 24 that always used to whine and snatch giving the impression the wheel ratios were wrong. Anyway once we fitted 13.6 x 38 and 12.4 x 24 wheels/tyres for row crop work in the days we had 3 row Standen beet harvesters, and surprisingly the tractor was far better with no whining or snatching.

Knowing the rolling radius for the 38's was same as 34's we then always left the 12.4 x 24 wheels on when changing rears in future.

We used that tractor many years and covered many hours with it with no axle faults, wind up or related problems,... Infact, said 6710 is still here in retirement and won't have even been started for some 9 or 10 years now...

Thanks for all help with the above post, I think I'm going to retain the 12.4x24s on the front, I'll replace them with something wider in the future but the tractor doesn't whine nor snatch as it is atm so as said, if it ain't broken.... And all that. Plus I was going to keep my 13.6x38s for ploughing so at least I've only the rear wheels to change as the fronts can stay the same.
