Tyre size

Dowdeswell DP8B at 14 inches
What size would the ideal tyres be on the tractor.
Got a choice of two tractors
18.4 rears and 16.9 fronts on one tractor
16.9 rears and 14.9 fronts on the other tractor, they are both the same model tractor. John Deere 6410

Or is another combination better? Open to all suggestions.

I would use the 2nd combination but that's my preference not a fan of wide tyres on a plough tractor.

Another question, I know the inside measurements have to be set according to the plough, the plough book gives a range for example in my case 48 - 64 inches. BUT in an ideal world does it make any difference if you are near the narrower end of the range compared to a wider setting? Ie should you set them narrower or does it make no difference?

What wheel centres are you at just now?most tractors are set to match tramlines and you adjust your plough on the true line adjuster to suit, few years since I worked a dp8 ,an ma 100 being last dowedeswell I worked

Work with a DP8B and a 100 MA at 14 inches one tractor on 540 mine on 600 , the 540s mark the furrow very slightly with the 600s its impossible get a job to read right ,row crops [ 380 s ] are on frequently during the summer a mile the best for quality of work. I,d go for the 16.9 s

72 inch tramlines but it was more out of wanting to know what was best or if there wasn’t anything in it. Seen a few people with reversibles at ploughing matches and they always seem to have the wheels in fairly tight or narrow and wondered if this was better.

Reason for that is so you don't have 2 wheel marks on finish but that's more for 2 and 3 furrow ploughs.

A little more information would help. what bodies have you got on the plough? The width you are ploughing has little effect on the width where your wheel goes, that depends on how far the mouldboard moves the soil. If just for commercial work you would probably get away with either but the narrower the tyres the easier it will be to match up!

UCN boards and I know what you mean about the mouldboards moving the soil.

Will go with the 16.9 on the rears and 14.9 on the fronts if I can get the insides in line.

I know little about reversible ploughing and if asked I would tell you to put them inside to inside as that’s what I do ploughing conventional. This discussion was had the other day on another post and it was said that it’s better centre to centre. Don’t know if either is right or wrong. The post is on the 4th page of machinery thread “front furrow width adjustment”

I have a dp8b 5f 14 inch on ucn. Iv used 16.9 38s, 20.8 38s and 520 38s they all run fine and make a good job. Id buy the best of the two tractors as the tyre size of both will be fine to do a good job.
