UK here we come!

Hello everybody! After browsing the forums I'm very glad I found you all! There is clearly some very knowledgeable and helpful people here so thank you for your time in advance!

I am originally from Somerset, but have lived overseas for about 14 years now. I have been working in the dairy industry for six years full time in New Zealand and Australia, where I met my partner (he was my manager on a farm in Victoria!) and we would appreciate some advice and information about moving to the UK and what to expect from working in the dairy industry. We left Australia for NZ as my partner's dad was very ill and sadly he passed away last year. My parents are not getting any younger and my dad has Parkinson's so now it is me feeling the call of home, and as a couple we are ready for a new adventure.

We have been managing a beautiful 80 hectare split calving farm in the North Island for just over two years now, with 300 mostly crossbred cows when we started, and now achieving similar production with 260 cows and aiming for 520kgms/cow this year. There is only the two of us on farm, with relief milkers giving us three days off every third weekend. We work for a sharemilker who has investments in multiple farms, and the farm owners do most of the farm maintainance and their son helps us on occasion if we need an extra pair of hands for herd testing etc.

I have worked as a vet nurse, and spent a lot of time with horses in various aspects, and I am currently studying a degree through Aberystwyth University distance learning with ruminant nutrition as my main focus but I have a passion for cows, soil, crops, and genetics, which I initially caught from my partner. He has been in dairy for over 20 years and while he has recieved offers of farm advisor positions and genetic consultant work, we both very much love moulding our life around the ladies. He is a competent hoof trimmer, having completed training courses in Australia, is experienced with AI, and is very capable of calculating requirements and formulating appropriate feed rations. He has managed large herds and multiple staff members on corporate farms in Australia, and seems to already know most of the content of my Uni work!

Salary is not our greatest concern, nor is location. We are interested in moving forward with our career, continuing to feed our hunger for knowledge and understanding, and ideally would like to build equity and a business in the future.

Any thoughts or input that can help us get a grasp on what we should expect in the UK, where/when to look, and positions that will likely be available to us would be very welcome, and thank you very much for taking the time to read my post.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read our post and offer suggestions. We are not 100% sure on exactly when the big move will happen, but it seems to have very quickly gone from a casual 2-3 year plan, to very much sooner! I am so happy to have got such a response from people on here, it is really boosting our confidence and getting us excited for new beginnings! We spent a lot of time in Wales on family holidays when I was growing up and I would love to make it home! ?

I've seen several share farming opportunities come up recently on facebook. Grazing gurus on facebook is useful. Also contact lic as they will probably point you in the right direction for jobs.

Good luck with the move.
Sharemilking is something we would definitely be interested in, we just love taking care of the ladies and have got very attached to the herd we have here and love them as our own, with many named pets! My profile picture is my number one girl Diana!
I've had a peek at the Facebook Grazing Gurus page and it looks like a great place for us to keep an eye on closer to the move, whenever that is!
Thank you for your input, we appreciate all the help we can get!

Thank you so much to everyone who has messaged or commented ? It's hard to explain how comforting and confidence building it is to get support from a community we love so dearly.
We will be bringing our dogs with us, I have an older Great Dane cross, and we have a working Huntaway x, but if there is not a position for her on farm I also do agility with her to keep her occupied. My interests are baking, gardening, sewing and chickens! To name just a few, when I'm not studying! My partner has a love for big boys toys, in particular planes and helicopters, and he will definitely need a new motorbike when we arrive! And we are both particularly interested in genetics and nutrition, and the Kinsey Albrecht approach to soil science.
Although we are very excited, it is also a bit nerve wracking as we know there will be some differences to get to grips with, so please keep it coming! The more info the better! ?

Just like to offer the best of luck! There’s a massive deficit of people with your experience in the industry so I don’t think you’ll have much trouble finding an appropriate opportunity
Thank you so much! ? your kind words are gratefully recieved! We hope we can find an interesting position, that's also a little challenging! Actually starting to get very excited!

In NZ a huge percentage of farms are Spring calving (or split calving) and June 1st is dubbed "gypsy day" as this is when most people are moving to start a new position so as to get comfortable before the busiest half of the year starts. There seems to be a quite a lot of variation between calving systems in the UK, is there a particular time of year where more positions are likely to be available? Or is this not something significant we need to work around?
We are thinking we will work until the end of the dairy year here, or close to it, and arrive in the UK in June. Ideally we would have a few weeks to have a bit of a holiday, catch up with family and scout out our new surroundings.
We will initially be staying with my parents, and casual work relief milking would keep me going, and my partner is happy driving tractors or other machinery for a short while, but would be nice to have an idea of seasonal patterns and work availability ?

We need someone with engineering skills to run our AD and other home made systems.
Not something we have an enormous amount of experience in, but always willing to learn! My partner is the mechanically minded one! We are still about five months away from the move too.
