Its 2 sides of the coin.
Heads , you're the disruptive child , what do they gain by accepting you.?
Tails, why would you leave a powerful trading group to join a less powerful one, what do they gain by accepting you?
Less powerful or less intrusive. The first may not be correct, the second almost certainly is.

If the EU want to enter into a free trade agreement with the UK, they are of course at liberty to do that. and it is totally allowed for within the WTO and TPP agreements.

Except, the EU don't want a free trade agreement. The idea of free trade scares the carp out of them.
I’m sure your aware the EU (amongst other things) is a free trade deal between 27 countries and 450 million people, equal to the 3rd largest population on the planet, in addition the members of the EU Have a further 40 odd FT agreements with a further 55/60 other countries. Doesn’t sound like they are scared of FT deals to me.

If you believe the EU is genuinely interested in free trade then you are beyond help. It has, ever since it's inception, acted in a protectionist manner and done it damnedest to protect its car, aviation and food industries. That is not free trade in anyone's book except yours.

We pay £13 billion a year for our fta , so it's not really free is it .

'Ever closer union'.

I still do not see why a free trade agreement need to be dressed up with human rights, free movement or any of that bilge. Unless of course, it is actually just a political stunt designed to create a Federal Europe and centralised USSR style collection of puppet states.

Or it just seems a better plan than beating the sh!t out of each other
