You had as much influence as anybody else, those you elected chose not to use it.
Which other countries asked their citizens ? Remember maastricht? Several countries rejected it but Ireland were told to vote again and give the right answer which they duly did, when it was clear it wouldn't be approved by all the eu countries it was quietly dropped and brought in bit by bit without any of the eu citizens being asked, just because pro eu governments agree doesnt mean their people want it, that's not democracy

Swapping the EU free trade deal, for a deal on the other side of the globe, is akin to a farmer deliberately selling off chunks of his own farm, and buying different plots in the next county, to replace what he has sold off.

That's fine and I have no problem with your wishes or anyone else that wants a us of e a federal state or whatever as long as all the people of europe get a vote on it, they haven't yet and it's being brought in by stealth and surely no one who believes in democracy can believe that's a good thing.

There’s a difference you see. You obviously have far more faith in “the people” knowing what is good for them than I do

To put it simply. Ever since 1982 I’ve been told to wear a seat belt (and ever since I dont, as my own little protest)
What friggin difference does it make whether that instruction comes from London, Paris or Brussels? The instruction is the same

If you believe the EU is genuinely interested in free trade then you are beyond help. It has, ever since it's inception, acted in a protectionist manner and done it damnedest to protect its car, aviation and food industries. That is not free trade in anyone's book except yours.
A free trade deal is a deal agreed freely by the parties, it does not have to be condition free to be a free trade deal. There is no such things as an entirely "free trade deal" where everyone produces what they want, how they want and sell to the bidder of their choosing, if you think there any such deal on the planet then highlight, likewise if you think the UK will ever do such a deal then your the one beyond help. Every deal has elements of protectionism which despite your dislike is entwined within the soundbites of "taking back control" and "America 1st".

Its 2 sides of the coin.
Heads , you're the disruptive child , what do they gain by accepting you.?
Tails, why would you leave a powerful trading group to join a less powerful one, what do they gain by accepting you?
If the other countries involved have nothing to gain why would they accept the UK? All sides have something to gain, the list contains countries with strong agricultural industries, very efficient car manufacturing industries and a well established financial sector.
