To all UK TFF members,
Rhiza are currently developing a UK-wide precision soil map in partnership with Cranfield University, the James Hutton Institute and AgSpace.
Within the areas below we can offer free soil scientist surveys of land. This is the most accurate and detailed form of soil mapping & surveying available for precision farming purposes, utilising 5m resolution satellites which are the highest available resolution to farmers within the UK. There is 80-100ha free soil scientist zoning going for any farm within the target areas, arable, livestock or veg farms. For larger blocks of land located within the squares there is the opportunity for more surveying available.
The soil scientist will split the field into soil management zones using GPS and produce a very detailed report on the soils including the following:
· Depth to rock
· Slopes
· Drainage
· Soil available water
· Topsoil texture
· Topsoil Stone content
· Topsoil CaC03 levels
· Subsoil CaC03 levels
· Subsoil texture
· Subsoil Stone content
The reason for this survey is to ground truth two soil data sets, one from ourselves using soil brightness satellite imagery and one from Cranfield University, with their detailed soil surveys which are currently not freely available to any other organisation. See below the data sets starting with Cranfields on the left, then our satellite scans then the collaboration of the two. Once the data sets are joined together this allows us to create a national soils map providing an easier entry into precision farming nationwide.
If you firstly think you are farming within the selected squares and secondly interested in free soil surveying please don't hesitate to reply, PM or contact us via the phone number or email below for further details and to check your location against the squares. We look forward to hearing from you and hope that TFF members will be interested in being part of this exciting project!
