Ukraine

Lithuania , Latvia and Estonia are really worried. Putin already says the Baltic States naturally belong to Russia.

Saying it is one thing, but who would the natives side with?

According to recent census returns ( :ROFLMAO: ) two-thirds of Crimeans are ethnically Russian.

It must be quite easy to annex territory if the locals welcome you with open arms...

As long as the heavy mob don’t confiscate your property does it really matter who thinks they are head cook and bottle washer? Does it make a lot of difference to the man on the street in Ukraine whoever is in charge? In my experience you’d struggle to find anybody out there who can lie straight in bed at night on either side. Most foreigners are bandits of one breed or another.

While it is probably true today that 60+% are ethnic Russians this is what caused problems after the Ukraine became an independent country.
Before WW11 The Crimea was home to the tartars. After the war Stalin deported the bulk of the population to the Gulags as he did not think they had resisted the Germans strongly enough. In fact of course many Ukrainians had welcomed the Germans with open arms as they universally hated Stalin, due to his appalling treartment in the 1930( read up the Holodomor) . With the ending of the soviet Union many of thes people returned to their homelands and wanted to reclaim their properties as happened to Jews across Western Europe. The problem was that the ethnic Russians who had been settled in these properties had nowhere to go, and were not happy to find total strangers were turning up on their doorsteps demanding the occupier leave.
