I hve the chance to use a single cow milking machine but the alfa-laval oil-free vacuum pump that comes with it has not been run and maintained for a long time. How can i refurb it so it works again?

Looks handy. Not something I know much about but I would take that end cap off and you should find a rotor with some vanes that move within in order to pump air. Make sure the vanes can move freely......

Fck it, chuck some diesel in it and see what happens!! :playful:

Might have a few bits and pieces you can borrow long term if you like.
Cluster, shells etc.

Thanks for the tips, and thanks for the offer, it's currently set up for goats so that might be very handy

The vanes are made of graphite and they are fragile. No need for lubrication, but I hope that the chamber isn't rusted or very worn. Open it as milkloss says, don't drop the vanes. You should have some vacuum tank, that the overflowing milk don't get straight into the pump. It works if the vanes are alright.

I'd start by taking it apart and making sure the vanes move without sticking anywhere then check all the pipeline etc for blockages, get one bit going at a time and it should go fine. Have you started it up at all?
If you have any goat related parts I'll be happy to relieve you of them (y)

Was given a portable milker by mother in law with the exact same pump. Pump was seized solid and the motor was so knackered it blew the electrics out!
Any way I didn't give up and stripped the pump down, the vanes were swollen and didn't slide and I think the bearings had seen better days, freed it all up and got it working sort of but realised something better would be needed. As mentioned above, it should have a small interceptor on it to stop any liquid getting to the pump.
