Uneven chopped straw

Location

We will have a very uneven stubble this year due to very laid corn, difficult harvest and lots of stopping and reversing with combine when chopping.

In my quest to move less soil I was aiming for a single pass (or 2) with a shallow disc before daddy drilling no front discs/tines engaged

Trouble is discs will simply ride over a thick mat of straw, at least won't spread it around

If I bought a new cultivator I was considering shallow tines, like Horsch Cruiser. Would that cope with lumps of straw, would a stubble rake be better or simply should I drag the cultipress tines through as pass 1?

Any suggestions

Lightweight discs will just ride over the stems as you say. Do you have a heavier set of scalloped discs parked in the nettles somewhere? Otherwise you want a winged tine to boil it all up and mix it in. Or a better disc drill that can slice through it. The Rapid (daddy drill??) has thicker discs that can be bad for hair pinning straw into the slot.

Some molasses would help the soil biology to break the straw down if you have the time but your discs will kill those worms & fungi. A decent dollop of pig sh*te would help too - from memory, you have access to plenty.

I would say if you’re not used to low soil disturbance establishment it doesn’t sound like those are the fields to start pushing that way this year.
Don’t try and force a system change when circumstances aren’t right to give it a good chance of working well for you would be my advice.

Will probably end up using the sumo Quattro over everything but use ld points at only 5”. Discs have a good scallop and plenty of weight.
Maybe this year isn’t the year to force it.

Baling is way behind due to weather
