untreated seed

That seems steep. I'm sure when I asked last year-so I could see what We were saving it was about £80t.

Maybe it's just the cynic in me but how many of the of the mobile dressing firms have ties with seed houses/input distributors/agro firms??? Maybe they don't want it to be to much of a saving maybe they want c2 seed to look quite reasonable when compared.....just a thought.

Massive mark up on seed dressings

If you really do want to apply a SPD I would suggest buying your own and asking the cleaning company (if you use one ) to apply it ................. they won’t be keen !

Presumably you don't apply aphicide or an autumn herbicide as the crop will overcome the situation

I use herbicides - weeds grow in healty soils just as well as cash crops do unfortunately, low disturbance does mean that sometimes I don’t need to make those herbicide applications until spring however

Don’t seem to need aphicides much though

Just lucky I guess ! :)

I'm not sure it does . :scratchhead:
If you want to grow crops with only the inputs you give them then this is a greenhouse that serves up pest and fungi free water and food. This is what hypdroponics does.

If you put crops in soil then you want the environment to help you, clover for the nitrogen, fungi to turn all the dead matter into plant useable resources.

You don't want take all, but you need to have dead matter eaten up and turned in into organic matter to hold water and many other useful bi-products which feed plants.

Do you need fungi? - yes, you just need the right ones. you should only use fungicides with high specificity or you just kill all of fungi. Now you are into trying to crop hyrdroponicly in soil - this is less likely to be sucessful.

Seed needs to accociate with soil fungi to grow - is coating it in a fungicide going to help or hinder that ?

There was a recent academic study into wheats relationship with ‘Arbuscular Mychoryzal Fungi’ which showed little fungal growth on wheat roots until about March, when it began to multiply massively. So the fungicide seed dressing will have done its job protecting against soil born pathogens at establishment and will possibly not have much effect against beneficial AMF through the main growth stages.

Now I come to think about it, I may well have read it in a snazzy new publication called ‘Direct Driller’... :D

what about Latitude for 2nd wheats most expensive of all dressings can we take the risk of not appying it for 2nd wheat
drilling after mid October has the same effect a dressing planted in early October
this year I am planting second third wheat next week as it is dry and travelling will be easy no dressing
never had a problem with undressed seed except where fusarium is high after a wet grain fill very low levels this year

round here the biggest risk this year is drilling into dry seedbeds with too many clods above an inch in size
the soil could be dryer in early November than now this happened in 1989 1996 and others

Has anyone experience of using a rotary cleaner for cleaning grain to use as seed? They look a very quick and cheap way of cleaning chaff and small grains out of home saved seed.

yes we use a rotary cleaner - its will do 80t/hr pre-cleanng for the dryer at harvest which reduces fire risk and increases combine capacity as the store can tidy up the sample a bit. Then slowed down with tight screens in it we run at about 5t/ha cleaning seed through it, does a perfectly acceptable job, we can dress as well if required with a applicator we made (thread i here about it) which is also very handy for adding moisture to sub 9% OSR !

there is a thread on here somewhere with loads of pictures as mentioned when we installed the new dryer a couple of years ago

Now hang on Clive.... deter has been a marvellous addition to agronomy in recent years. Its easy to sit here and say everyone is brainwashed but we've all got cosy because deter has made life easy and we've all forgotten about BYDV and aphids. (admittedly this problem is dependant on drilling date and not an issue every year)
Someone will soon comment "I never use deter" and never have a problem but as most of your neighbours probably do and they keep the population in check, how many years before aphids are a serious autumn threat for us all again!?
The same can be said of glyphosate and couch grass! Banning really would be a serious issue that we've all not had to deal with for many years!
Very true a good post

Very true a good post

i don't agree, having never used Deter mentioned in that post Its added nothing to my agronomy and it wont be missed

how many that use it and think its essential split field in half and saw the untreated half fail ?

In the bad BYDV year a couple season back I recall posts on here where farmers said they had bad BYDV despite deter and spraying ............. so that worked well then !

#Brainwashed !
