Upgrading slurry store

Sorry, so 22 weeks is what’s needed. Do I go lagoon or tower? Grants etc
22 weeks is what is currently needed in a NVZ.
By the noises being made by those in power, this may well change in the not too distant future, I certainly wouldn’t count on 22 weeks ticking the boxes in 5/10 years time so either wait until more is known, make it bigger but by how much or make it extendable, but again by how much. There’s also the likelihood that covers will become necessary but precisely what sort of cover will be needed is also unknown as yet.

There’s a lot to be said for wait and see.

Currently cows on cubicles scraped into a pit. Pit just now is small only roughly 80000 gallon, open top silage pits surface water going into it too so that fils it up too fairly quick in a wet time. I’m in Scotland by the way and was a big write up in Scottish farmer about new regs but no proper details other than 22 weeks and phased in over 5 year .

Are you able to dig a fecking big hole or will you need above ground storage?
Massive hole, concrete ramp and floor with concrete panel sides would be ideal but big $$$$$$$$$$$.
Are you still allowed clay lined lagoons?

What do they teach in this course, exactly?
Calculating your slurry storage need’s from open yards and head of stock, what you can and can’t do with yard water, run off from open silage clamps, storage of FYM etc. what you can do and can’t do going forwards.
A lot was common sence but well worth going on.did it through farming connect.

Ideally where my sheds and slurry store is just now would replace slurry tank with new tower but where it has to situ I don’t think i would get one big enough in the size . Lagoon yes could dig it in anywhere but still need somewhere to store daily scraping before transferring to a lagoon .

Can you dig a lagoon or build a tower wherever you have room and use your existing store as a reception pit for daily/weekly, slurry/dirty water and then pump it over once a week? That way you can be sure to build something that will be big enough for now and the future. Think about any new sheds you may build too and make sure it suits them.

Yes that’s what would need to happen.

I know a big farm that wanted to do this and put a new big lagoon far away (5-600m) from the dairy unit mainly because of a road and the farm’s dairy unit is on a hill above a river directly above a beach. Council and Parks refused and made them put it below the dairy unit on 1 hell of a slope and very close to the river. Exactly what the farm didn’t want to happen!

It’s shocking where they were told to put it,you can throw a stone from the lagoon bank to the river 🤦‍♂️
