Upgrading to more powerful lights on a Volvo excavator.

I have a Volvo ec140cl excavator. The lights on it are getting a little tired and I have a led lightbar to put on. It is a 600mm unit. Seems to draw a fair bit of power. It’s replaced 2 work lights and it still blows the fuse. The power lead it came with is much heavier than the original wiring. Do I need to put in a better supply and use a relay switched from the original lights wires? The digger is 24v.

I would think you will have too. Is the lighting system 24 or 12v on machine though? If it’s blowing fuse on 24v then it’s pulling a fair few amps. What size fuse? Is it blowing straight away ir after a few seconds

My Volvo is a bit smaller,2.5 ton but I replaced all the lights with amazon supplied led lights which have all been faultless.got 2 on top of cab,1 on rear of cab and 2 on boom. Giving me light where ever the bucket is.i use the boom lights pretty much all the time and it certainly helps eliminate shadows when trenching.i even purchased deutch connectors also from amazon to fit to light cables to make lights plug int to existing plugs.done the same on my jcb telehandler and don’t even get radio interference either

Thanks for the replies. I seem to have created more problems than I started with unless something was already going wrong in the background. I can now blow fuses with all the lights disconnected. Not getting much time to play with it at the moment. Hopefully back to it tomorrow.

There’s a short to earth then somewhere. I would start with the connections you made and work back towards switch, relay and power supply
