Hello all, I hope the weather is fine where you are and if you're not too busy mowing and baiiling I would appreciate it if you could help me out with my research.
My name is Peter and I am a PhD student in business and management studies at Huddersfield university. I am a farmer’s son and live and work on a hill farm in West Yorkshire. We farm around 100 hectare with 60 suckler cows and just under 100 sheep. The university has awarded me a PhD scholarship to carry out some research on farm businesses, looking at entrepreneurship and strategy in the agricultural sector.
I have chosen to research around the realities facing UK upland/hill beef and sheep farmers, aiming to understand how farm businesses are managed in response to the challenges within the beef and lamb sectors. I want to explore the main challenges facing upland farmers, how farmers are responding to these challenges and what support farmers need to grow their businesses.
I’m not one for posting vague surveys and disappearing into thin air. I am after talking to farmers over the phone for about 30 minutes at a convenient time for you. Several publications will be produced from this research which I will share on the farming forum, mainly: academic articles, teaching resources and summary reports. All information will be anonymized with all participants entered into a competition for a chance to win one of two £75 Yorkshire farm shop meat box delivered to their door.
So if you are an upland/hill farmer, whether you run diversified businesses or stick purely to farming I would like to hear from you. The questions are very open ended about you and your business and can be sent to you before hand (if you like).

Thank you.
