how do you lift those trailing ploughs on the headland.?
Were two basic types...rack and pnion, where a cog on the wheel meshed with a rack on the cross shaft, pulling the rope drooped the rack into mesh, as it wound its way round the cog it changed the geometry of the depth wheel linkage, lifting the plough out of work
Later ploughs had the "oil bath" trip, where pulling the rope locked a ratchet mechanism in the wheel hub, locking it to the depth wheel shaft, as you pulled the plough forwards the wheel dug in the ground and lifted the whole plough out of work

i drove an old road grader in oz that had dog clutches instead of hydraulics. engaging them could break your wrist. The oil bath lifting mechanism i was told gave a more positve and smoother lift however i only used oil lift so cannot compare with rack type .But oh the joy of pulling the rope in wet going on heavy ground to see the plough barely coming out of the soil choked with mud ......thank god for Harry Ferguson!
