how do you lift those trailing ploughs on the headland.?

Were two basic types...rack and pnion, where a cog on the wheel meshed with a rack on the cross shaft, pulling the rope drooped the rack into mesh, as it wound its way round the cog it changed the geometry of the depth wheel linkage, lifting the plough out of work

Later ploughs had the "oil bath" trip, where pulling the rope locked a ratchet mechanism in the wheel hub, locking it to the depth wheel shaft, as you pulled the plough forwards the wheel dug in the ground and lifted the whole plough out of work

What were the advantages,if of the later "oil bath type".
As a youngster I used an old Ransome plough and cultivator that used the same type of "rack and pinion"lift system.

The marshal, and the BMD together with one of the p6 high majors should have been ok, if with tired paint. The marshal had a new big end and vaporiser, also king pins and bushes, but the steering box needed work( I used to own it) The late John Freeth rebuilt the engine in the p6 he used for ploughing, it can be identified by a number on the bottom of the rad.The BMD I have driven but I dont know what work was done other than a clean and repaint, but it ran well

The oil bath lifting mechanism i was told gave a more positve and smoother lift however i only used oil lift so cannot compare with rack type .But oh the joy of pulling the rope in wet going on heavy ground to see the plough barely coming out of the soil choked with mud ......thank god for Harry Ferguson!

The "oil bath" lift is in fact allergic to oil! Hub centre drum would be a more accurate name Ransomes hand book states that it needs stripping and cleaning twice a year and that no oil or grease is to be used! This is because oil will make a nice "glue" when mixed with dust, and then the lift goes on strike. It has another problem. With the "rack and pinion" lift, should it fail, you can wind the plough out of work on the depth control, with the hub centre type you cant, also this lift is far too complicated, containing springs, pawls, rollers etc, all of which can and do give problems

i drove an old road grader in oz that had dog clutches instead of hydraulics. engaging them could break your wrist.
